Manchester, New Hampshire is a town in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. Manchester is part of the Manchester–Freehold, NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1718 by Loyalists from Rhode Island as a stop on their way to Quebec City. It became an American town on July 2, 1800, when it was chartered as Manchester by act of Congress under the name "Andover". The original name reflected its location near Andover and not its affiliation with that city or region. Manchester's first settler was John Payne who arrived in 1721 and set up a farmstead about two miles east of the present-day downtown core. By 1725 Payne had moved his family to what is now Market Street and built a brick courthouse which still stands today (today's public library). In 1728 one of Englishman James Ogden's voyages visited North America and detailed his discovery of land between Maine and Massachusetts in territory claimed by both countries but never surveyed or occupied. This journal entry led to further exploration by British officers including Captain John Smith who landed at Manchester on November 16, 1729 with his expedition seeking entrance into Canada through what is now Acadia National Park but only discoveredched over parts of what is now Maine during his travels inland before returning home without finding any new land beyond what he had seen on his ill-fated voyage! In fact this entire area lying along modern coastlines as we know it today formed part of Acadia until Queen Anne’s proclamation in 1802 systematized all French Canadian holdings within limits prescribed by Parliament! Although little written about this period before our own times there are many references to Portuguese fishermen setting up shop along these coasts selling salt water catch among others so #Manhattan should be no surprise!! Manchester experienced explosive growth beginning around 1800 due largely to three factors: skilled labor shortages caused by increased population density; technological advances brought about by increasing exports resulting from production advances such as cotton manufacture; and military needs stemming from Revolutionary War developments such as artillery development which made possible massive infantry campaigns across southern New England necessary for victory over British troops occupying Boston Harbor etc…..during this time much infrastructure/land were platted including streets grid plan patterns typical for towns prior to 1830….the current downtown area consisting mostly high rise buildings began popping up hereabouts c1900…………………much later developers redeveloped much older areas which included parts residential/commercial/industrial formerly located behind large industrial complexes……………..in recent years some mixed use redevelopment has happened along riverfronts near college campuses…………………..Overall Manchester has been undergoing various transformations throughout its history……………………………………………………………………….
