Beachwood, New Jersey is home to one of the world's most popular tourist destinations: the beach. The town has a rich maritime history dating back to at least 1821 when it was known as Sandy Hook. In that year, George Washington and his forces were besieging Fort Monmouth in Long Island and needed help getting supplies overland. A group of fishermen came up with the idea of selling goods they brought ashore on their boats to help get the troops by. This became known as "The Patriot's Gift." In 1923, Beachwood was made a borough in Camden County, NJ. As time went on, more and more people from all over the United States started coming to Seaside Heights for vacation or business meetings. It wasn't long before there were enough businesses here to support its own police department and fire department. And so it continued - until Katrina hit in 2005! Since then, Beachwood has been able to bounce back quickly (and continue promoting itself as an exciting destination for tourists). There are now several dozen businesses here - many of them related to tourism or maritime history. For example, there is a museum devoted entirelyto marine gifts and souvenirs (which opened in 2007), a pier where visitors can buy seafood from local fisherman (the first commercial pier in Seaside Heights), and even a small harbor where you can buy caskets from Maritime Traders Inc., which used to be one of the biggest dealers of naval artifacts in America (now closed). And if that weren't enough, Beachwood also has its own professional football team - The Beachesiders!
