Beachwood is a small town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Beachwood is located on the Delaware River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Camden and 25 miles (41 km) west of Philadelphia. The township was organized on April 15, 1814, from portions of Monmouth County. It was named for George Washington's estate on the Delaware River. Ulysses S. Grant lived in Beachwood for some time during his presidency and donated land to the town for a public library and park. A train stop called "Grant's Walk" is still in use today near the intersection of Route 33 and Summit Avenue. In 1912, American Electric Power Company built an electric power plant in Beachwood thatgenerated electricity until it closed in 1962. In 1925-1927, the Belle Isle amusement park opened in Beachwood with two amusement areas--the Main Park and Seaside Park—and also had a waterpark called Belle Isle Pier which remains open to this day as part of its beachfront complex today known as The Pier). In 1929-1930, the Pennsylvania Railroad built a line from Camden to Rahway through Beachwood making it possible for people to buy tickets to go see fairs or shows at various points along their journey northward including Elizabethtown Speedway in nearby Elizabethtown and many other places including Monmouth Junction where they could change into cars going southbound before continuing their journey northward Along what is now Route 33 there were several hotels/motels operated by different companies like Holiday Inn Express etcetera along with several stores such as Woolworth's etcetera all along what is now Route 33 Business Street between School Road (now Shore Drive) at its eastern terminus then becoming Boulevard then finally becoming North Brunswick Avenue all these businesses existed until IED destroyed them all except one store which still exists today as Atlantic Pennsylvanian Dept Stores Inc.)
