Cliffside Park was founded by English farmers in 1764. The area that today includes Cliffside Park was originally a part of Trenton, New Jersey. In 1812, the United States acquired this area from Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Ghent. Cliffside Park became a township in 1834 and was annexed to Trenton in 1937. The original name for the town was "Trenton." In 1935, the town changed its name to "Cliffside Park," after Rear Admiral Clifford Parker, Jr., commander of Task Force 58 during World War II. At that time, Cliffside Park consisted of only about 1/4 mile square. It had a population of about 740 people. After the war ended, many returning soldiers and their families moved into Cliffside Park and it grew rapidly due to its strategic location on Lake Monmouth and its close proximity to Interstate 95. In 1960, the Township voted to become an independent city and adopted its present name, Cliffside Park-New Jersey (or simply "Cliff Side"). The city's rapid growth has led to controversy over how much control the city has over aspects such as zoning and development at least some residents feel is too limited
