Dover, New Jersey is a town in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,562 as of the 2010 census. Dover is located at The Delaware River on the border of Camden and Burlington counties. It lies along the NJ Turnpike and Interstate 95 corridor. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3 square miles (8 km²), all land. The first people to settle in Dover were Dutch colonists who arrived there in 1664 from Rotterdam. They named their settlement "New Amersfoort" after Amsterdam. The original Dutch settlers were followed by English colonists in 1714 and they renamed the community "Dover." As part of an effort to keep it separate from Burlington County, Natives called the creek "Hudson's Creek". In 1802, Dover became part of Monmouth County when it was created from parts of Camden and Gloucester Counties. During World War II, Dover played an important role as a military base for both America and Great Britain due to its location at strategic points on I-95JR between Trenton and Philadelphia. In 1951, Dover became an official town within Monmouth County as part of statewide changes made during that decade following passage of the National Statute Amendment which granted township status to townships within state boundaries without having to go through a local referendum process as had been done previously with villages or boroughs.
