Elmwood Park is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. In 1872, when Union County was formed from parts of Middlesex and Essex Counties, Elmwood Park became part of it and remained so until 1974 when it reverted back to Middlesex County under the new form of government. In that year, however, it amalgamated with neighboring Riverdale Township to form what is now known as Riverdale-Elmwood Park Borough Council which continues to be responsible for all village/town related issues including zoning and infrastructure development within its boundaries despite having a municipal status (i.e., no elected officials).

Elmwood Park was once a bustling township in the Delaware Valley, located about 12 miles east of Trenton and 18 miles west of Philadelphia. The town was founded by George Elmwood in 1795 as part of the Anglican parish of Allentown. It rapidly grew into a busy center for agricultural production, trade, and services. In 1834, Elmwood Park became an incorporated borough; it remained an unincorporated rural community until 1970. The first recorded resident of Elmwood Park was George Elmwood, who arrived in 1795. The population of Elmwood Park increased rapidly from its initial 50 residents to 300 by 1800. Farming became the primarystay of the economy, and several businesses opened up to serve the local farmers: a post office, a millinery store, a blacksmith shop. By 1834, when Elmwood Park became an incorporated borough, it had more than 1,000 residents. During the early 19th century there were several attempts to establish a school in Elmwood Park; these did not succeed because of opposition from the local farmer class which saw education as primarily derogatory and detrimental to their economic interests. In 1854-1855 there was also significant growth in industry within Elmwood Park due to construction on what would become known as "the Turnpike." This highway allowed travelers between Philadelphia and New York City through central Delaware Valley farmland; this contributed significantly to the town's growth during this period. In 1870-71 there was another major change within ElmWOOD PARK when John Haddon donated land for what would later become Pine-Richardson High School; this addition helped spur further development within thetownship and led to increasing educational opportunities for its citizens. By 1920-21 enrollment at Pine-Richardson had reached 1,500 students—this number would grow considerably over time thanks in part to generous donations from individuals throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and surrounding states (including $5 per student from Jersey City). During World War II most classes were held at home with only occasional faculty visits; however after hostilities ended many classrooms were needed across town due to changes in industrial production throughout northeastern Pennsylvania which necessitated larger schools on campus outside of towns like Allentown where manufacturing continued unabated (today's factories are scattered across multiple municipalities including West Conshohocken Township).
