When the United States military was founded in 1775, it was a small force with only a few cannons. The first American soldiers were not too thrilled about being forced to fight in Europe against British forces, so they instead enlisted in the militia. After America won its first war against Great Britain, Congress decided that it needed more artillery to help defend its new country and so they ordered several cannon manufacturers to provide guns for the Continental Army. These cannons became known as “the Kentucky rifle” because they could fire shot up to 100 yards and were used by both sides during America’s second war with Great Britain (1781-83). The Fairview Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1892. The first fire truck arrived in 1903. In 1916, the volunteer department became an organized fire brigade and began using a tanker truck. In 1934, the brigade became an operational division of the New Jersey State Police and continued to use a tanker truck. The brigade converted to a self-propelled engine in 1949 and continued using that vehicle until it was replaced by a new tanker in 1978. Fairview is a borough in New Jersey, located on the east bank of the Hackensack River. As of the 2010 United States Census, Fairview had a population of 15,823. The borough was formed from portions of Bergen Township on November 3, 1874, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. Fairview is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 26,521. The name Fairview is thought to be derived from the French word "faible" meaning weak or inadequate in quality and "veille" meaning watch or care. The first Europeans to come to what is now Fairview were Pieter de Hooght and his family who arrived on October 11, 1683. They platted what is now Fairview Township on September 17, 1740. The first settler in what is now Fairview was Isaac Norris who arrived on May 5th of that year. He built a small cabin near present day Spring Garden Avenue and West Pike Street. He also purchased land at what is now Northampton Avenue and Central Park Drive which he used for his farm until 1809 when he sold it to John Nicholson whose family still resides there today. In 1802, Nicholas Carpentier bought some land from Isaac Norris and developed it into a town called Carpentierville named after him and located along Easton Road between Market Street (now Patton Boulevard) and Spring Garden Avenue (now Central Park Drive). In 1807-08, John Nicholson built a small school on part of his farm which he donated to Carpentierville In 1811-12 Samuel Morse established an inn at Southwick Place called the Rush Hour Inn which served as both a hotel and place of worship for many years until it burned down in 1886 When Camden County was formed on April 1st 1795 its boundaries changed slightly with portions lying within Middlesex County including Camden itself while other areas including Fairfield Township remained under Union County control
Fairview was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, located on the border of Township 5 and 7. It was initially settled by Palatines who founded the township in 1798. The name "Fairview" is derived from an English word meaning "fair tract." In 1814, Fairview was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. However, it did not become part of Mercer County until 1838. In 1854, Fairview was renamed to Maplewood after maple trees that were common in the area at that time.
