Gloucester City is an unincorporated community in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,541 at the 2010 census. It is located on the wooded bank of the Raritan River. The first European to visit what is now Gloucester City was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it "Verrazano's Village" after his patron and friend, Viceroy Antonio de Verrazzano. For many years this name referred to a small settlement on the riverbank which had no permanent residents because its land passed into Indian ownership at various times during its history. In 1764, James Wright established a ferry service from Piscataway Township across the river to Gloucester City for passengers and goods transported between these two points. This allowed for large-scale development within the town boundaries without having to build new roads or bridges as would have been necessary with an open road system. In 1835, Maker Hinton developed a whiskey distillery here and began selling whisky commercially under the name of Smith & Weston Whisky Factory #1 (later known as Philadelphia Distilling Company). Manufacturing continued until 1917 when Prohibition closed down the industry in America due to government regulation of alcoholic beverages. However, some still continue production today out of nostalgia or interest in historical significance. The distillery has been reborn as American Whiskey inside an historical building that also houses local restaurants and shops called The Maker’s House Inn since 2018. In 1840 following Robert Morris's purchase of several plots of land adjoining Philadelphia's Second Market district for $2 million dollars he started construction on what would become Rutgers University campus - one of largest university campuses in North America at that time with over 100 buildings including residences and more than 350 acres (160 hectares) of land comprising today’s Newark Campus which includes both undergraduate and graduate schools/facilities etc.. Today there are only six buildings left from Morris' original plans: three administrative blocks (Klein Gymnasium, Science Hall and Executive Wing), one residential block (Morris Residence) and one professional building (Rutgers College President's Office). The remaining structures were added over time including student union Building (1902), Academic Quadrangle(1903),[4] Multi-Purpose Center(1968), School Administration Building(1970) – all designed by McKim, Mead & White architects – then demolished in 2003 when newly renovated under eminent domain by Rutgers University pursuant to state mandate following their merger with higher education authority New Jersey State University.[5][6] On September 14th 2017 Rutgers announced they will close their main campus effective fall 2020 effective workforce reductions[7]. However despite this news significant research programs will still remain active on existing campuses such as NJSU Global Studies Institute[8],NJSU Veterinary Medicine School,[9][10][11]and NJSU Arts & Sciences Institute which house various studios/departments like creative writing,[12]musicology,[13],dance performance art,[14],visual arts,[15],[16],[17]) while traditional undergraduate enrollment remains unaffected though projects such as Earth Science concentration moved offshore from Newark Campus into new facilities near Trenton.[18] As early as 1684 William Penn surveyed present day Gloucester City along with other areas situated along First Middlesex Township line forming part of East Brunswick Township [now Monmouth County]: ``the place where I stood upon my surveying expeditions aforetime''. Gloucester City, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,623 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-East Orange-Trenton metropolitan area. The name of the town may derive from "Gloucestershire," England. The first European settlers in what is now Gloucester City were Dutch farmers and traders who founded a trading post there in 1664. They named their new settlement after Sir Walter Raleigh's estate in Yorkshire, England (then part of Scotland). In 1732, John Moore became the first Provincial President of New Jersey and tapped into English religious fervor to lure settlers to his fledgling colony on the Rutgers campus at what is now Temple University. By 1738, some 1,500 families had emigrated to Gloucester City from all over North America under Captain John Montresor's leadership and government sponsorship. In 1824, as part of efforts by Governor James Ketchum to solidify Anglo American control over Middlesex County following the War for Independence, Gloucester City was incorporated as a borough with a voting population of only 615 residents. As township status increased through annexation subsequent years – including granting of civil rights – it became an important center for industry and commerce within Middlesex County during both its agricultural and manufacturing heyday beginning in the late 19th century until World War II when its factories closed down or were converted into other businessescombining with Newark and Elizabethtowns elsewhere in central New Jersey caused significant suburban growth around Glocester City as well as pockets throughout unincorporated portions of Middlesex County that maintain strong ethnic attachments thereto even today (e.g., Acton Township). In 1951–1952 consolidation took place with neighboring Rahway Township resulting in an increase in township size to 14 square miles (39 km²) while reducing voting population by more than half due largely to transferral of municipal services related to city services being accorded to Rahway primarily because its borders coincided better with those of then newly annexed Livingston Township which also became an official municipality pursuant thereto; this resulted ultimatelyinglourious Gestapo raids against citizens dwellings during which several dozen individuals were arrested without warrants or cause before dawn on one recent Sunday morning(a practice frequently employed by local law enforcement officials against suspected informers) during which no property damage was done despite numerous windows being smashed thereby incidentally underscoring how integrated township/city management had become by that time).
