Harrison, New Jersey was founded in 1764 by John Harrison. The town became a borough in 1849 and was incorporated as a city in 1886. Harrison is the most populous municipality in Bergen County, New Jersey and it is also one of the most ethnically diverse communities in America. The largest employer in Harrison is the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which accounts for about 60% of its GDP. Other large employers include Verizon Wireless and IBM. Harrison has a rich history that can be found from its earliest settlers to its current residents. John Harrison was born on December 12, 1724, in what is now Harrisonburg, Virginia. He moved with his family to what is now Middlesex County, Pennsylvania, when he was just six years old. In 1764, he came to what is now Bergen County, New Jersey with his parents and three siblings. John married Catherine coming from an agricultural background and they had seven children: Susanna (1765-1837), George (1767-1844), Polly (1769-1841), Samuel (1771-1834), Martha (1773-1850) and John Jr.(1800-1868). They settled near present day Weehawken Avenue and Union Street in downtown Harrison. The first store opened up shop here on Main Street in 1775 as "The Indian Store." Settlement continued to grow with the opening of more stores until 1800 when John's father died leaving him sole proprietor of the business chain that includes today's Port Authority of New York & New Jersey store at 11th Avenue and Park Place South - one of the world's busiest commercial destinations for passengers disembarking from airplanes or entering ferries or other boats at this location! With such an important economic hub close at hand - both physically due to its location on two bridges spanning Hudson River - continuing growth ensued as traders drove out competition for access to customers living within easy driving distance! By 1809 there were 16 stores operating under Mr. Harson's banner! This success would not be repeated however; over time Mr't Harson would lose interest/misdeliveries from his merchants along with competition from Erie Canal builders who could offer goods at lower prices direct to consumers! As early as 1825 local steel manufacturer Isaac Nourse offered free transportation across county line on weekdays if customers bought items including nails & screws 'from thence' - something unheard of before!! It wasn't until 1861 that NYC began offering freight rates only through their ports dues imposed by Parliament affording shippers protection against customs duties!!! By 1865 there were 106 businesses employing over 2200 individuals providing support services related to banking activities insurance products transportation manufacturing various crafts etc... during this time period much progress was made including incorporation of schools system water supply received Philadelphian donations $10K dollars !! More than 1/3rds natives are buried here making it one of America's oldest continuously inhabited Native American villages!!! Additionally it has been home to many famous people such as Presidents Ulysses S Grant & Rutherford B Hayes amongst others thruout history
