The name comes from Harrison Township (now part of East Brunswick), which was named for General George Washington's brother-in-law, James Harrison. The town was founded in 1824 by citizens of Manchester andgged to be called "Manchester West," but this name did not catch on and the town developed its own identity. In 1829 it became a municipality and received its current name. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all of it land. The borough borders Essex County to the north, Union County to the east, and Warren Township to the south.
