Hawthorne, New Jersey is a small town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The first coffee beans were grown in this area in the early 1800s. In 1892, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Ives opened the Hawthorne Coffee House on Main Street in Hawthorne. From then until 1949 it was run by their children and grandchildren. They sold roasted coffee and baked goods from their house until they closed down due to health problems in 1978. The Ives family reopened the shop under new ownership in 1991 as the only remaining independent roaster of its kind in New Jersey outside of Philadelphia'sickridge Coffee Roasters Inc., which has since closed its doors as well. During the 1990s The Iveses also became fixtures at local art shows and folk festivals throughout Sussex County with their popular Evelyn's Cookieshop Fairies Fairs being held every year during late summer/early fall (the event now known as "Coffee Festivals" because of their relationship with Hawthorne Coffee House). In 2002-2003 The Ives family merged with Dutch Bros., a small family-owned business that operates severalindependent Dunkin' Donuts cafes across North America including one located near MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ (now part of Dunkin' Donuts Corporation).Dutch Bros.' coffee beans were ground fresh for all Dutch Bros.' cafes - not frozen or stored like many other convenience stores' coffee is today."Dutch Bros.' location supplied most of Atlantic City with quality roasted beans" according to Rob Salsowitz who wrote about Dutch Bros.' history for NJ Advance MediaNewark native Tony Ramos took over management duties at Dutch Bros.' Hawthorne is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Hawthorne were French traders and missionaries in 1675; they named it "Hochelaga," meaning "place of huckleberries." The first white people to live in the area were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1732. They called the area "Sint-Joris" which means "Saint John's Parish." In 1814, Hawthorne was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. On March 14, 1825, it became a village after voters approved a resolution to that effect on November 3 that year. On July 1, 1872, it became a borough with full city rights and been renamed Hawthorne City Limits Borough by an act of local government legislation on December 10 of that year. On October 25, 1995, Hawthorne voted to become independent from Newark and become its own municipal government separate from Trenton due to budget constraints within the larger municipality. That same day – October 25 – also saw the official dedication of Hawthorne Municipal Stadium as home field for the new team in the newly formed Atlantic League (now called the Brooklyn Nets). The first known café was established in 1795 by Pierre-Simon Laplace in Paris. The café served French roast coffee from small pods called “pods” that were ground up for sale to customers. By 1825, Laplace had opened what would become one of the world’s first ACM (All American Coffee Merchants) locations at 5th and Independence Streets in Philadelphia. This location became an important node for early American roasting operations with its high quality beans and wide variety of teas available for purchase. By 1848, Starbucks had opened its first store located at 14th Street & Union Place in Seattle, Washington Territory. The company quickly gained popularity due to its unique blend of roasted bean products along with its affordable prices. Starbucks continued expanding into other markets soon after while also introducing new blends and flavors each year to keep things exciting for customers.
