The town was founded in 1853 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a small farming community. Highland Park became an incorporated municipality on May 1, 1907. In 1976, Highland Park merged with neighboring Neptune City to form a larger city. On July 11, 2009, Highlands Park voters passed a referendum asking for annexation by Monmouth County and becoming part of that county as its official city status would be recognized by law. The origins of Highland Park can be traced back to 1853 when Scots-Irish immigrants arrived in New Jersey from Scotland looking for new opportunities and land to grow crops and build homes on. The first settlers were brothers John and James McConnell who purchased about three acres (1 kilometer) east of present day Highland Park from the Native American Lenape people for $200 cash only. John McConnell named his new settlement "McConnell's Mill" after his brother-in-law James McDonnell who owned the mill in Lochalsh Parish near Dunfermline in Fife, Scotland which he had come to America to find work). The McConnells built their mills around what is now known as Fourth Street and First Avenue within the boundaries of today's Highland Park Community Lodge; they also built two other mills which are no longer standing: one on Third Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue (the site now occupied by IMAX movie theater), and another on South Second Street between Scotch Road (now used as an arterial road) and Delaware Avenue (now an alleyway). By 1857 itexport had become such a substantial industry that many local farmers decided to move away from rural life altogether due to low prices for land or lack thereof associated with this rapidly expanding industrial sector. By 1860 over 60% of all grain grown in Monmouth County was exported; this increased acreage planted with corn accounted for more than half of all future farm production hereabouts [Ed.: This area includes what is now part of Neptune City]. Lowered Prices during the early 1860s did not stop Scottish immigration but rather led some landowners - primarily men -to specialize in cattle raising instead while others devoted themselves completely anew ot agriculture including blast furnaces set up at home where coal could be bought cheaply from Pennsylvania Coal Company yards across town [Ed.: From Philadelphia], making possible last gasp efforts at subsistence level before railroads brought cheap transportation alternatives closer [Ed.: This period corresponds roughly with eastern Pennsylvania’s Beaver Valley]. With resources exhausted following years long drought there was little incentive remaining homeowners/farmers/cattlemen turned entrepreneurs seeking greener pastures elsewhere so numerous businesses were born outta necessity alone without regard fo economic opportunity or credit availability ???Scots began arriving starting late 1800’s thru 1910 mainly agricultural workers coming north via ferries bringing tools & animals marts & train stations like Harrisburg then working upriver until landing @ Hudson's Bay Co warehouse near Trenton NJ during winter trading season building boatsanchorage piers taking them home w/ themigrant families headed back down river arranging passage thru neutral Spain

Highland Park is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,521 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Highland Park were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624 and named it "Hertogenbosch". In 1714, British colonists founded a settlement on the site of present-day Highland Park and named it Gloucester Township after Gloucestershire, England. The township was merged with Bergen County in 1836 to form this current town. In 1849, Scotsman John Maclean settled here and started his grocery store which became one of the largest in the area. He also operated a tannery and blacksmith shop. At that time Highlands (now part of Manchester) had no post office and mail service only reached Half Moon Bay from Englewood through Morristown via Albany or even further north to Hackensack via Perth Amboy. A post office called "Highland" was established at present-day Highland Park on February 14, 1851 by Wm. Cranch and James Dolan with offices at 6th Street and Caldwell Avenue; it remained open until 1865 when it was moved to Montvale Road near where Midtown Manhattan now stands. Maclean's store soon become an important center for local commerce as well as providing transportation for goods along Route 100 from Hackensack to Elizabethtown through Montgomery Township before continuing on to Bound Brook NJ., Princeton NJ., East Windsor CT., West Windsor CT., Nutley NJ., Rockville MD., Bowie MD,, Washington DC,, etc.. With its busy market presence and access to major highways, Highland Park quickly grew into a thriving community during its early years; however, because of its remote location it didn't enjoy much development until after World War II when land prices appreciated greatly due to finds such as mineral rights underlying some of Highlands' hillsides including oil reserves discovered near Woodstock Lake while still being privately owned by landowners/businesses including Macleans & Co.; thus starting what would eventually become known as "the highlands renaissance." During this period various businesses found success such as Isidore Strauss & Sons department store opened in 1951 followed by Kress Paper Company (later Koch Paper Company), Jiffy Lube convenience stores (later Mobil Service), Atlantic Broadcasting Corporation - today WPVI TV - later ABC Radio Network's WTIC radio station - both becoming instant locals overnight sensations; Carbondale Dairy opened up shop shortly thereafter giving rise to what are now two Chain Reaction restaurants located just east of the original shopping center across from High School; Ford Motor Company built their first assembly line here among other important employers during this decade including American Cyanamid Incorporated which manufactured strategic materials used in U2's 1978 album ' Poparis'; finally during this era several streets were renamed reflecting commercial success such as avenues like Irvington Drive became Idlewild Boulevard while Vail Road became Sunrise Highway after resorts around Sunrise Point closed down following nationwide recession beginning around 1982; thus sealing off most remaining retail space once again concentrating instead within adjacent suburbs like Bridgewater Township which continue enjoying rapid growth today despite numerous obstacles facing them such as lack of sewer lines connecting many homes within their boundaries making parkland available for sale again without penalty whereas Highlands remains largely bedroom communities surrounded by large suburban housing developments with few reasons why anyone outside those areas should bother visiting them...
