Highland Park is located in the township of Morris, just south of Trenton. As of the 2010 census, the population was 506. Highland Park is a suburban town that straddles the border between Mercer County and Middlesex County. It has a mix of pre-war architecture from its early years with some more recent additions, as well as land that was part of Morristown before it became a borough. The first settlers in what is now Highland Park were farmers who came to what is now Trenton from Scotland in the late 18th century. In 1785, John Caldwell bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land in what is now Highland Park from Sir James Craig for £200 (£ today). The original village that was established at this location consisted only of a schoolhouse and several residences. By 1830, over 100 people lived in Highland Park and there were five churches: one Congregationalist and four Presbyterian denominations. As development increased around Trenton during the 19th century, many Scots emigrated to America and started breweries and other businesses along with their families or friends back home. One such business owner was Alexander Mclntyre, who founded McKnight Brewing Company on Market Street in 1834(). In 1867, McKnight Brewing merged with Dutch-owned New Amsterdam Brewery to form Dempster & McClure Brewing Company (). Dempster & McClure operated until 1925 when they amalgamated with Adolphus Busch Brewery to become Anheuser-Busch InBev (). During World War II, much production took place at Anheuser-Busch's proprietary brewery located at 814 North Broad Street () which produced beer for American troops stationed overseas (). After the war ended in 1945(), many workers returned to America while others settled permanently in Highland Park beginning in earnest after 1948 when Interstate 95 bypassedMorristown Township altogether making it an even easier access point for people looking for suburban living options near job centers (). Highland Park is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was founded on July 1, 1838 by Scots-Irish settlers from County Antrim as part of the Township of Monmouth. It became a Borough on December 3rd, 1916. The first settler in what would become Highland Park was James Cunningham who arrived in 1837 and erected the first cabin in what would be Highland Park. In 1840, John McCloskey settled here and started his own mercantile business which he operated until his death in 1865. Other early residents included: James Condon (1848-1914), George Wetherbee (1850-1927), Elisha Eliot (1853-1929), Samuel Hinson (1857-1920), Andrew Murray (1860-1945) and Peter Tevis (baptizedphenomenon). In 1868, William Bendix purchased 640 acres of land southeast of Highland Park from Moses Swift for $175 per acre and began to build a dam across the Hackensack River to improve irrigation potential for his farmstead there. This ranching venture failed but Bendix continued to develop it into a large community that grew rapidly due to its good location - two miles south of Hackensackville on Route 9A - its fertile farmland and easy access to transportation including ferries landing at the then new Hackensack Terminal Lake where trade goods were unloaded and delivered to points east including Newark Liberty International Airport. The growth rate slowed after World War I when many farmers moved away because of high prices for agricultural products caused by new technologies such as tractor farming which could now be produced much closer to home; however, this change did not last long as other industries soon followed such as medical equipment manufacturing and later light industrial development including software development companies which have made Highland Park their headquarters over the years. Today's community is built upon an rich history with strong Irish roots dating back more than 200 years combined with today's advances in technology that has led to increased businesses and jobs throughout the borough - something that can be seen most easily within its borders thanks to its excellent public transportation system which makes commuting easy.
