Highland Park is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Newark-Uniontown- Princeton, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Township was formed on November 3, 1881 from portions of Newark and Uniontown. The name "Highland Park" comes from two places in Scotland: Loch Leven and Bealach na mBan or "the high height". The first place is near where Highland Avenue and Route 9 intersect, while the second is in what is now Mount Laurel Township. The land that makes up Highland Park was originally bought by Alexander Hamilton for $5 per acre (1/4 mile). In 1807, when Morris County was created from parts of Middlesex County, Hamilton's land passed to that county as well. However, because Morris County was smaller than New Jersey then - only comprising 10 townships - it never received its own town hall or other municipal services such as water supplies or zoning regulations like those that were given to larger townships like Newark and Uniontown. This left Highlands Ranch – which had been founded in 1795 by Scotsmen who arrived in North America on the ship MV Argyll – as the only major community within Morris County without municipal services. In 1881, however, Sections 2 and 3 of Township Law No. 1 were passed providing for an election to be held on November 3rd of each year to determine whether a township should be established within one or more existing townships in order to provide better service to its residents. On this date, sections 5a through 5e were also added defining certain territorial boundaries for the new township including areas extending into Hackensack and Essex counties which would later become part of Lincoln Township (now West Caldwell). These boundaries are still used today when considering whether Highland Park should form a new township or not based off current research conducted by borough officials responsible for Zoning Appeals within the municipality limits! A vote took place with 78% voting in favor of establishment followed by 22% against; thus Highland Park became a reality! With this new township formality came many changes both inside and outside of townhall including an increase in taxes which helped support allocating more funds towards infrastructure improvements such as higher schools & fire pensions etc... Additionally there has been recent renovation & expansion projects undertaken throughout our village including brand spanking new police station(s), library addition(s), tennis courts & much more! As mentioned earlier Highland Park owes its existence largely to Scotsman Alexander Hamilton who purchased over 1/4 mile blocks surrounding his original rancho de las Americas just north of present day Highland Avenue & Routes 9 & 1010 enroute to Passaic Valley via Hackensack Creek!!! Thereafter he did extensive landscaping work creating beautiful rolling hills today known as "Hamilton Heights" along both avenues making him one very early developer instrumental in shaping what would become present day HighlandsPark today! Whilst we can appreciate Hamilton's pioneering efforts no development could have taken place without his wife Catherine who ran the home front office from their home until her death circa 1907!! They had five children together plus another 25+ grandchildren living here side by side until their deaths also leaving behind quite an impressive legacy !! Lastly we must give credit where credit is due…Edison Heaton moved HERE FROM NEWARK back during WW2 & started laying down power lines right thru our midst………..for all this good work coming outta' here over these past few decades THANKS TO HIS KIDS NICELY!!!!

Highland Park is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,498 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was formed on December 3, 1874 from part of Elizabeth Township. It is named after the highlands of Scotland. The first settlers to what is now Highland Park were Scottish immigrants who arrives in 1795 and named their new land "Highland Park." The Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived later also called their lands "Highland Park." In 1824, a group of Englishmen settled in what is now Highland Park and they started building homes there. By 1830, the English had built over 100 homes in what is now Highland Park. In 1875, when Elizabeth township was split into two parts based on political lines drawn by the state government during the American Revolution, HighlandPark became part of the newly formed Essex County. The name for the borough was chosen by referendum and it retains that name to this day. As one of Essex County's most populous municipalities (9,498 residents as of 2010), HighlandPark has long been an important center for government and economic activity. Its courthouse complex still stands today (the only courthouse complex in Essex County) and its libraries are well known throughout central NJ for their quality materials selection and library services.
