The Jersey City National Guard is one of the oldest and most veteran-owned military organizations in New Jersey. The guard was founded on December 12, 1903 by Mayor John P. Smith with the purpose of providing city services while reserving potential military service for disaster relief and other emergencies. The first unit to be called to active duty was a detachment from the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment (New Jersey Volunteers) stationed at Hoboken Terminal. The Guard has played an important role in both peace and war throughout its history. In 1917, during World War I, the Guard helped quell a riot that had broken out in Newark; two years later it participated in the Battle of Stroudsburg as part of American forces against Germany. From 1922-1934, the Guard fought in World War II as part of Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force under LtGen James Doolittle; after the war it served as an air defense force for New York City until disbanded on July 1, 1948. In 1955, Mayor Dutch Schultz ordered the formation of a National Guardsmen unit to provide security for New York's Kings County Fair; this unit became known as "The Devils" and patrolled Midtown Manhattan until disbanding in 1957. In 1972 Governor William Garment authorized reactivation of portions of local militia units which were scattered across New Jersey due to state budget cutsbacks; these units became known as "The George Washington Unit" and patrolled Paterson NJ until disbanded in 1974 when all volunteer militias were merged into State Militia Command Headquarters at Trenton NJ under Major General Ronald Ladd’s command. Since then, regular Jersey City National Guardsmen have provided essential support to Operation Neptune’s Spear response to Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy – both times roundly praised by Mayor Bloomberg for their heroism and professionalism - as well as numerous other events throughout our community including responses to Laytons Christmas Parade last year and next year's Christopher Street Festival! The United States National Guard has a long and varied history that is reflective of the country itself. The National Guard was first organized in 1792 when the Continental Congress created a national guard to protect Americans during the Revolutionary War. The first units were raised from militia members and state militias, but by 1821, there were also units raised from federal soldiers and marines. During World War I, the National Guard played an important role in helping to fight off German aggression. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Department of Defense (DoD) which made the National Guard its primary arm consisting of all military branches except for the Coast Guard. The DoD also authorized states to raise their ownNational Guards for individual service under certain circumstances. From 1948 to 1970, there was a dramatic change in how National Guards were used by Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush as they engaged in Operation Desert Storm and Gulf War One respectively. In both cases, significant numbers of National Guardsmen were called into action without any prior notice or announcement to their commanders-in-chief or political leaders like president Clinton did with Army Rangers during Operation Noble Eagle back in 1993 after 9/11/2001 attacks). In recent years there have been calls for changes within the National Guard including proposals such as allowing women to serve on unit juries and increasing pay rates for enlisted troops while preserving some rights currently reserved for officers such as retirement benefits after honorable service or death in service (although these have not yet come through). Despite these controversies, it is clear that the history and tradition of what is now known collectively as "the Golden Age of American Troops" has left an indelible mark on America's landscape - serving her citizens no matter what happens on Earth tomorrow (or even today!).
The National Guard has been present in the United States since 1775. One of the first items that the National Guard contributed to American society was a smallpox vaccine. In 1807, the Militia Act of 1811 authorized the arming and training of militias to protect American citizens from potential Indian attacks. The Militia Act also allowed for military duty by members of the National Guard if necessary to support Federal law enforcement or militia activity. In 1861, with America’s entry into Confederate States of America, many men from New York and other Northeastern states enlisted in the Confederate Army as soldiers. Many New Yorkers who had served in the Union army returned home after slavery was abolished in April 1865; however, a few thousand New Yorkers decided to fight for their old country again. Soon after Abraham Lincoln was elected president on November 4th, 1861, he called for an investigation into whether any New Yorkers had enlisted in Confederate forces while their state was still part of Unionism. On December 20th, 1861, Congress passed an act authorizing President Lincoln to call up all male citizens over twenty-one years old who had served in either Union or Confederate armies during the war (a total population of about 6 million). This act made it possible for individuals who had fought in one side or another to re-enter society and contribute to both sides during Reconstruction. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, many men from former Confederate states joined hands with other Americans to form The National Rifle Association (NRA) as a way to promote gun safety and Second Amendment rights across America. NRA membership continues today as one way for Americans to identify themselves politically as well as physically when taking part in patriotic activities such as Fourth Of July celebrations or Black History Month events.
