Kearny, New Jersey is a small town located in Ocean County that has been known for its artisan coffee since the 1800s. The first documented coffee shop in Kearny was established in 1792 by Nicholas Hesse and his father-in-law, Emanuel Gottlieb. Coffee beans were imported from Sweden and Turkey and roasted here on the family farm. Today, there are over 20 cafes located throughout Kearny, including several owned and operated by the Hesses themselves. The history of artisan coffee is intertwined with the history of New Jersey itself. The state was founded by Dutch farmers in 1664, and until 1814 it was part of British America. During this time, coffee was an important part of Dutch culture and commerce. After independence was gained from Britain, coffee became an important element of New Jersey society. Beginning in the late 1800s, various entrepreneurs began to open their own cafes inNJ; these include Moses Jacobs (1853-1949), who opened Jenker's Cafeteria on Market Street in 1905; Julius Rosenwald (1893-1964), founder of Sears Roebuck & Co.; Harry S Truman (1937-1945), who cofounded Knoppers Coffee Shop on Roosevelt Avenue; Harry Crosby (1900-1976), owner and operator of The Crosby Brewery; Irving Morin (1911-1996), who operated Dempsey's Steak House on Clinton Avenue; among others. The history of artisan coffee in Kearny, New Jersey begins with a group of farmers who decided to start their own coffee shop in the town in the early 1800s. The first coffee shop in Kearny was called The Coffee House and it was operated by two men, John and Ebenezer McGee. Over time, other people joined the business and eventually it became known as The Coffee Shop, Ltd. In 1916, The Coffee Shop, Ltd. purchased a small mill located on Route 9 in Kearny from J.H. Smith & Sons. They continued to operate the mill until 1922 when they sold it to A&W Brewing Company for $10,000. In 1923, A&W Brewing Company began production at their new mill which was also known as The Coffee House Mill #2A. From 1923-1926, The Coffee House Mill #2A produced about 90% of all the coffee made by A&W Brewing Company. On December 10th, 1926, The Coffee House (Ltd.) went out of business due to lack of support from its owners and ceased operations; however, this did not mean that artisan coffee stopped being produced in Kearny!
Kearny is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 21,569. Kearny is located on the Delaware River and forms the southern border of Newark. The two municipalities are currently considered to be part of one consolidated municipality by both state and federal law. The area that would become Kearny was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1614 as "Hammersmith Township." In 1764, it became part of Easton township before becoming a separate borough on February 6, 1834. On November 3rd, 1870, it merged with Newark to form a single municipality under the name "Newark-Kearny Borough". The merger came about because New Jersey's state government decided that Newark should have its own police force while Kearny should continue to be governed by Easton Township officials. In 1952, when Newark-Kearny Borough changed its name back to Kearny Borough again due to mergers with other municipalities in New Jersey (including Middletown), it reverted back to its original spelling of "Kearny." Today, Kearny is home to more than 20 businesses and over 100 residents who work in those businesses. Its economy depends strongly on trade shows being held at the Greater Newark Convention Center which makes up much of its GDPs outside of residential areas such as North Caldwell and South Orange near Interstate 95. Other services provided by the borough include refuse collection and street cleaning - both catered towards Priority 1 neighborhoods like North Caldwell or South Orange which have large concentrations of lowincome households and students attending schools within walking distance of these areas.

Coffee was also mentioned in the Bible, where it is mentioned as one of the plants that God blessed with immortality. The Arabs began to trade in coffee in the 12th century and started producing large quantities of this aromatic drink. By 1492, coffee had reached Europe, where it became an important commodity crop. In 1516, Pope Leo X decreed that coffee should be considered a sacrament and required all bishops to serve cups of this beverage at Mass. The Dutch Republic adopted coffee drinking as an official custom in 1624. In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Conte patented a process for roasting beans that made espresso possible. With advances in technology and globalization, espresso spread throughout much of the world including North America and South America by the late 19th century.
Kearny was a small town in New Jersey, located in Union County. Kearny was founded by Dutch settlers in 1681 and named after the Irish sea captain, John Kearney. The first store in Kearny was opened in 1814. In 1861, Kearny became the site of the Battle of Bull Run, during the American Civil War. In 1865, Kearny became part of Jersey City and experienced rapid growth when it Became an incorporated city. The population of Kearny reached 10,000 by 1900. However, by 1920 its population had shrunk to 6,500 due to World War I and Prohibition depressed prices for goods caused by prohibitionism. The decline of the manufacturing base following World War II resulted in a dramatic decrease in population throughout much of New Jersey; however, Kearny fared better than most other municipalities because it remained an agricultural town with a large dairy operation until recently. The first settler to come to what is now Kearney was John Sparks who arrived on November 15th, 1681 with his family from Ireland along with Isaac Hoyt and ten others. On December 17th they erected a cabin on land that would later become known as Sparks Meadow which still stands today across from current day's intersection of Hwy 9 & US 1A (just off Gateway Drive). The first store within the township opening up about 1814 at 4 Broad Street did well for local merchants early on as there wasn't much else around at that time aside from hogsheads filled with whiskey being transported down the Hackensack River from Pennsylvania bound ferryboats landing at Belleville Landing on Long Branch Bayou which portended bad news for any European village caught upriver during those days since British authorities could take whatever they wanted without paying anything back). By 1830 there were 3 stores open all clustered together one block west/northwest corner Store #4 now known as Gertrude's Grocery also restorant now called Joe's Pizza Place & pasturage behind store now home of Lighthouse Cafe( later changed name to Red Hookers) In 1861 while skirmishes were taking place around Newark Liberty Bridge over river some troops took shelter inside a farm house just east or north side Wheelwright Mill Rd between Old Trenton Rd & Cedar Hill Rd not far from current day’s interchange of Rte 9 & Hwy 287 so Lt Col George Armstrong ordered his men under cover into this mill property where he reported seeing Confederate General Robert E Lee leading his horse herd across wheelwright road towards Princeton NJ then turning southwesterly off highway near mill before making their way back into Virginia where they eventually surrendered having lost more than 50000 men but no commander! From this point forward every engagement involving either Confederate or Union forces would be recorded & chronicled both through newspapers articles written about these events as well photos taken during these wartime times which remaining largely unchanged until recently when research began= pretty much everything we know about Earlington Mills including history prior thereto comes directly or indirectly through records held by local government hereabouts?&nowhere else does such info freely available? Kearny lay fallow for years after Bull Run battle until reclamation began following war years efforts spearheaded by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong himself who saw great potential for development within once again resurgent post-war America! This community slowly regained its former prosperity thanks largely to two factors: irrigation projects completed during WWI followed by increased demand for milk products resulting from prohibitionist policies; also farmers responded favorably to offers made for allotment homesteads adjacent to distribution centers operated out of town - greatly boosting rural economy remainING strong even into present day " KEARNY CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL Park Map

In 1830, Kearny became the county seat of Warren County. The town experienced rapid growth during the early years of the 20th century; its population reached 5,000 by 1920. However, during World War I Kearny's economy collapsed due to lack of demand for troops on the home front. The population decreased rapidly after the war and peaked at around 10,000 in 1940. Today, Kearny is a small village with a population of under 500 people.
