The first coffee beans were roasted in Kearny, New Jersey in 1798. The first coffee shop in the city was opened by Nicholas Biddle in 1829. In 1865, a small-town post office called Kearny was named after the town's first coffee roaster, J.L. Kearny and Sons.
Kearny is a town located in Hudson County, New Jersey, on the border of Bergen County and Hackensack County. It was founded by English colonists in 1720. As of the 2010 Census, Kearny had a population of 28,692. The name "Kearny" comes from Old French Carthage, meaning "the place where Hannibal garrisoned his army." The first people to live in what is now Kearny were the Lenape Native Americans who hunted and fished around the area for centuries. In 1720, English colonists arrived in what is now Kearny with the intent of establishing a permanent colony. The original settlers were four families: John Beardsley (1719-1792), James Cook (1721-1803), Moses Woodbridge (1726-1798) and Abraham Nock (1727-1800). They built a small house known as the Tavern on Main Street which they called their home until they sold it to Samuel Weiser in 1814. Weiser used it as his office until he sold it to George Wickersham in 1825. The first school opened in that building on October 15th, 1768. In 1830, Kearny became part of Bergen Township when it was formed from parts of Hackensack and Hudson Counties. The population grew rapidly during the 19th century due to waves of immigration from Europe and Asia; many German immigrants settled here including Johann Friedrich Fasching (1801-1875), an engineer who designed bridges and tunnels across America's Great Lakes region; Augustus Kahn (1806-1885), a goldsmith who mined quartz near Kearny; Frantz Jacobi Kappesberger (brought over with troops during World War II); Rudolph Klingensteiner (1905-1985); among others. In 1910, following an act passed by the New Jersey General Assembly which designated certain areas within townships for industrial purposes – such as those around Sayreville – Kearney received its own borough status which lasted until 1916 when Borough Council decided not to renew it because of lack of support from residents. The post office at Kearny began serving residents there on December 12th, 1807; however, it was given its current name three years later when mail was moved from Morristown to Newark due to postal service limitations at that time along with other changes brought about by consolidation within New Jersey via legislation enacted during Andrew Johnson's presidency under President Ulysses S Grant – most notably creating 24 new municipalities throughout New Jersey through legislation called "An Act To Consolidate Municipal Government". Postmasters at various points throughout history have included Isaac Seamonroe(s/he 1809 - 1865) ; Jeremiah McNulty(s/he 1840 - 1904) ; Cornelius Hickey(s/he 1830 - 1901) ; John Fenton(s/he 1812 - 1888) ; Cyrus Tingey(s/he 1800 - 1889) After consolidating all township offices into one building effective January 1st 1921 under then Mayor Elihu Root Sr., individual postmasters continued working out their command schedule inside that facility until May 2nd 1975 when they were transferred outdoors onto Plains Road adjacent to Fort Lee Army Base after being replaced by automated voice recognition software operated bymail facilities managed by EMAIL OPERATIONS CORPORATION pursuant to section 782a OF THE NEW JERSEY CODE OF REGULATIONS

In 1811, Kearny was renamed after George Washington. The town continued to grow throughout the 19th century, becoming one of the most industrialized in New Jersey. By the early 20th century, Kearny had become an important regional center for manufacturing and surrounding communities developed around it. However, during World War II, Kearnys fortunes changed abruptly when its factories were bombed by the Japanese army. As a result of the bombing, many businesses closed their doors and residents lost their homes and jobs. The town slowly recovered in the postwar years, but retains some of its traditional industries including printing and plastics
