In 1778, Colonel John Armstrong founded what is now known as Armstrong Coffee Company on King Street in Long Branch. In 1825, New Jersey passed a law forbidding retail sale of intoxicating liquors except for medicinal purposes. This law made coffee an important part of New Jersey culture and its economy until prohibition ended in 1933. During Prohibition, many farmers turned to growing hemp instead of beans because hemp could be grown without federal permission while still being legal under state law; however, Hemp Farming Act of 1937 outlawed all hemp farming in the United States. Long Branch, New Jersey is a township in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Ocean City metropolitan area. The name Long Branch was first given to an estate in 1720 by Nicholas Long who also founded what would become Camden as a township in 1834. The town was named for George Hickey Long who served as Mayor from 1880 to 1892 and as a U.S. Senator from New Jersey from 1902 to 1912. In 1848, the tracks that led from Philadelphia via Southwark and Hackensack down the Delaware River were extended through Long Branch into this community and it became one of the most significant commercial centers in Atlantic County until its closure by Amtrak in 1976. In 1929, the Interstate 95 freeway (now I-95 Business) was built through Long Branch and although some businesses survived on Route 287 (the old route between Camden and Staten Island), many others closed due to traffic congestion or competition from larger towns along I-95 north of Bear Pass Road such as Edison Township or Brick Township south of Interstate 95. In recent years there have been efforts to revive some retail activity around Route 287 but these have not yet succeeded in reversing decades of decline for this once thriving industrial community located just off Route 22 east of Vineland According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all land. Long Branch is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Newark-Rahway, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Long Branch were Dutch farmers in 1664 who named it "Benedictus". In 1724, John Woolridge purchased 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land from the Augustinian Fathers and set out to build a gristmill and sawmill on what is now State Route 36. He named his mill "John Woolridge's Mills" and soon had an extensive real estate business. In 1807, he sold his mills to Isaac Brockman for $10 per acre. Brockman built a gristmill and later built a store and home near present-day Bogota Avenue and South Street; these structures remain as evidence of early Long Branch life. In 1828, George Washington visited Long Branch while on his way to White Plains Junction in Westchester County. At that time the only road leading into town was by horseback through open fields surrounding milepost 7 on what is now US 23/9 north of where it joins I-95 (the original structure still remains). Washington stopped at Mr. Woolridge's mill on July 29th for dinner before continuing his journey the following day up Centre Road which became Interstate 95 after this visit. In 1832, James Bridge bought 2200 acres (1000 km2) of land east of New Brunswick along the Delaware River from Nicholas Ludlow for $8 per acre ($160 total). This area would become known as Bridgeport Township when it was annexed by Long Branch in 1898. bridge repurchased most of this land including all but 3 miles (5 km) south of where modern Bridgeport sits today from Bethlehem Steel Company in 1949 – one reason why Bridgeport has been so important historically since its incorporation into Long Branch! The steel plant closed in 1980 however some parts are still used today such as a power substation just outside downtown! One major event that took place during those years was when America’s first train arrived in township limits on November 15th 1887 with passengers going to Trenton before reaching Philadelphia the next day! This event created interest both within township boundaries and beyond as local businesses began offering transportation services! Rail travel quickly replaced stagecoach service throughout much of eastern Morris County due to available tracks right there conveniently close by! By 1901 over 60% of goods transported via rail originated from long branch! also during this time many jobs were created connecting industries with larger markets across America often putting people directly into work instead of traveling long distances!! As new technologies developed locomotives became increasingly inefficient running off steam making longer trips Sketchyville Yard got their own locomotive !! finally mainline service merged with NJ Transit at Elizabeth station IN1999!!! That left us with Amtrak which we take advantage OF every single day!!
