Manville is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Manville was Nicholas Manville, who arrived in 1685. He and his family were among the earliest to be granted land in Mercer County. In 1828, John Fenton purchased a tract of land from Nicholas Manville for $1,500. Fenton founded the village of Manville on what is now Route 9 near where he lived and worked as a farmer. He named it after his home town of Milford (now West Milford). In 1835, he sold all of his holdings except for one-third of present-day Manville to Robert Cranch for $5,000 cash and title to 640 acres (240 hectares). Cranch laid out much of what is now central and eastern Manville into blocks that are still visible today. In 1865, John Hurd bought 320 acres (160 hectares) from Cranch to form the nucleus around which modern day manvilless grew. His heirs continued farming this parcel until it became part of Edison National Laboratory in 1947 when it became public property following the dissolution of NJ Bell Telephone Company.. The Constellation was named for Vice Admiral James Cushing, one of the most distinguished naval officers of his time.
