The name of the town is derived from the Monmouthshire region of Great Britain. The borough was formed on December 12, 1903 from portions of Metuchen Township. On July 1, 1911, it became a city with a population of 26,902. As part of the 2009–10 United States Census Bureau revisions to statistical areas in New Jersey, Metuchen was removed from Warren County and placed within Middlesex County. The borough had a total area of , including (or including) all of Metuchen Township and two blocks of Borough Park annexed by the borough on May 15th 1984. According to the United States Census Bureau, Metuchen has a total area of ; all land. As of the 2010 United States Census there were 10,819 people residing in Metuchen Township and 2,599 residents living in Borough Park annexed by Metuchen Township as part of its annexation process on May 15th 1984

Metuchen is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,848 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Dutch settlers in 1714 and incorporated as a borough on December 12, 1879. The township's first mayor was John S. Dickinson. The Metuchen area has been inhabited by the Lenape people for centuries. They referred to this area as "Mentochee" or "Lenapehoking". In 1664, the English established their own colony in what is now New Jersey and named it Staten Island after Jameson's victory over the Dutch at Battle of Fort Nassau on Long Island (now Staten Island). The English colonists built a fort here, called Fort Orange, which they fortified with earth and stones from nearby Tenontown Township (now part of New York City). The fort served as an Indian war post until destroyed by French forces in 1681. In 1714, two groups of Dutch settlers were traveling through the area when they discovered land that would become Metuchen. Pieter de Valk and Hendrick de Wever purchased some of this land from the Lenape for $1 per acre (or 25 guilders per person per year). On December 12, 1879, Metuchen became a borough within Essex County following passage of an act by the New Jersey Legislature entitled "An Act to establish Boroughs within certain Counties in our State." Metuchen played an important role in American history during World War II as one of America's largest military towns with its peak population being over 100,000 residents during wartime; however its growth slowed after 1945 due to declines in manufacturing jobs throughout Essex County and elsewhere in New Jersey due to automation and other factors. However recent redevelopment efforts have resurrected interest in Metuchen as an attractive community with many new businesses opening up around town since 2007; including several high-end restaurants such as Benares Grill & Wine Bar and Gourmande Bistro Garden & Wine Emporium along with several small businesses such as CVS Pharmacy and Dunkin' Donuts outlets.
Metuchen is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,684 at the 2000 census. As of 2017, the Borough had an estimated population of 8,362. The town of Metuchen was founded by colonists from England in 1714 and named after Sir Nicholas Metuchen, 1st Baronet. The first government office in the borough was a justice of the peace post which was discontinued in 1727 because it conflicted with that of Hackensack. In 1815, Metuchen became part of Bergen County when it was created from portions of Upper Township and Ramsey Township. In 1900, both Hackensack and Ramsey townships were merged into Metuchen as well; this made Metuchen the only municipality in Bergen County with two townships (Hackensack and Ramsey) within its borders. In 1951, METUCHAN BUSINESS DISTRICT INC., a not-for-profit organization chartered to promote economic development within the borough through marketing and transportation services for small businesses, was organized under Chapter 295 of Title 42 of the New Jersey Statutes. Districts 1-5 are located within Borough Hall Annex; 6-10 are located on Market Street between Lincoln Boulevard and Court Avenue; 11-15 are located on Huntingdon Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and Spring Garden Avenue; 16 & 17 are located on Elmwood Avenue between Bigelow Road and Park Avenue; 18 is located off Maple Lane near Route 202 outside boundaries of borough limits
