In 1951 it merged with nearby Elizabethtown to form what is now known as Metuchen-Elizabethtown Borough. In 2013-14 there were several protests against planned changes to Route 9 which will make it more dangerous for drivers by making small intersections into blind curves; this has been called "the largest [road] protest in Metuchen's history". Since then, the borough has undergone several name changes, including Metropolitan Borough of Metuchen in 1912 and again in 1968.
