The Metuchen Coast Guard Station is also responsible for conducting marine patrols, providing security for marinas and other water resources, and maintaining law and order on the state’s shorelines.
Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,871 at the 2010 census. The name "Metuchen" is derived from the Delaware word "mitsu," meaning "river of milk." The first European to visit what is now Metuchen was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and he named it after his hometown of Verona in Italy. By 1681, all of Morris County had been incorporated into Pennsylvania and Metuchen remained part of Passaic County until 1834. The first store opened in Metuchen on February 5, 1814 by George Cushing. It was the only business open when the area became Union Township on November 3rd that year. In 1824, John Prentice organized a POSToffice there and ran it until 1865 when it was transferred to Hudson Township. Union Township formed on November 3rd, 1824 from parts of Passaic and Middlesex Counties when Morris County was divided into two parts for political purposes during the Consolidation Period which followed the American Civil War. In 1870, Metuchen began to experience heavy development as an agricultural center due to its strategic location between Philadelphia and New York City on the Susquehanna River. With over 1 square mile (2 km²) of land available for commercial farming alone by 1880, Metuchen quickly grew into one of America's most important agricultural towns with more than 20 businesses and 2200 residents

The Coast Guard gift history goes back to the late 1800s. The Coast Guard was established on May 14, 1898, when the United States Congress created it as a separate branch of the armed forces. At its inception, the Coast Guard had six vessels and only a handful of officers and men. The first gifts from individuals or groups were small items like seashells and buttons. But over time, donations and requests for help grew larger and more frequent. By 1922, there were over 100 Coast Guardsmen stationed at various ports worldwide. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the development of a national coast guard radio network in order to keep in touch with each other during large disasters such as hurricanes or pandemics. This allowed for faster response times when needed and helped prevent coastal emergencies from becoming widespread catastrophes. By 1969, the Coast Guard had 12 ships, 1,500 officers and 9,000 civilians working aboard them around the world. And in 1995, after centuries of service to this nation – both before and after prohibition – members of the Coast Guard received their own unit insignia (the first being given to members of Marines) in commemoration of their role in prohibition-era law enforcement activity on America’s coasts.
Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,027 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Bergen County by land area and fourth-largest city by population after Hackensack,Paramus and Passaic. The first Europeans to arrive in Metuchen were Dutch colonists who landed on Long Island (now Staten Island) in 1624. They named their settlement "New Utrecht" for the new Dutch colony of Utrecht in the Low Countries. In 1675, English colonists founded a major trading post on what is now Main Street called "New Amsterdam". The name changed to "Metuchen" in 1701 when the proprietors of "New Amsterdam" donated land to build an academy and courthouse at what is now State College (later Rutgers University). During World War II, Metuchen was an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location near Newark Airport and its close proximity to shipyards and other factories. The war also created a large number of homeless people as families were forced out of their homes during wartime shortages of food and housing. After the war ended, many Metuchen residents moved away or left town altogether because they found better opportunities elsewhere. In recent years, Metuchen has regained some popularity as a vibrant community with active businesses and a growing cultural scene. It is home to several cultural attractions such as State College's Arts District which offers art galleries, theaters and music venues; State College High School's fine arts program; and the Antique Village Museum which features period pieces from throughout New Jersey history. The town was first settled by Germans from Alsace-Lorraine who arrived around 1800. A part of Bergen County until 1925, Metuchen became part of Addison Township when it was formed from portions of York Township on February 11th, 1925 following an act entitled An Act Relative To Artifacts And Historical Monuments Within Addison Township And Other Parts Of Bergen County (25 N 0 W 10 H). On July 1st 1957 portions of Metuchen east of Route 22 were annexed into Clifton Park while most west side annexed into Ridgefield Township on November 3rd 1957 pursuant to provisions contained within Act No 2 Of 1956 relative thereto known as “An Act To Annex Incorporated Places” passed by General Assembly At Large On September 25th 1955 having been sanctioned By Special Order No 5(A) dated October 12th 1954 under Section 4Of Local Government Law No 7 OF 1953 As Amended By Chapter 127 Of Title 15 Of This Legislature effective November 3rd 1957 pursuant To Proclamation From Governor Charles Ewing issued Pursuant To Section 6Of Municipal Corporation Law No 9 OF 1951 .
Metuchen was founded on April 12, 1781 by settlers from Massachusettes. The town was named for James Mercer, the founder of the Mercersburg bank in Bucks County. The first store in Metuchen opened in 1802. In 1834, Metuchen became a borough and was incorporated as a city on December 15, 1938.
