Metuchen, New Jersey is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 10,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paramus–Westwood area and has a ZIP code of 07652. Metuchen was first settled in 1764 by traders from Boston and Albany. The town became an incorporated township on February 16, 1831. On May 15, 1834, Metuchen had a population of 12 residents when it approved a petition to become the seat of Hunterdon County. In 1868, the Township Board voted to move Metuchen to make way for new development in Paramus Township which would grow rapidly due to its railroad access and name change thereto from "Paramus" (pronounced "pah-muhs") to "Metuchen". In 1926, Metuchen reincorporated as a borough with 3 wards; all but one were abolished by 2001 when Westwood annexed the borough into Westwood Village. As of the 2010 United States Census there were 11,883 people living in Metuchen Borough - 4% more than the 7,711 counted in 2000 but 1% less than the 11,886 counted in 2008 according to preliminary reports from the Municipal Services Department. As of December 2009 only 2 houses on Main Street remain standing after being demolished during Hurricane Irene; both had been vacant for years prior to that date because their owners could not come forward with plans for rebuilding following such damage inflicted bystormy weather conditions. Metuchen, New Jersey is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census.[1] Its name is derived from the Lenni Lenape word "manteca" meaning "big house."[2] The first settler in Metuchen was Nicholas de Metuchen, who arrived in 1683. By 1727, there were more than 100 settlers living in the area. In 1740, George Washington and his party passed through the area while on their way to Princeton. Washington stopped at Metuchen for lunch and then continued on his journey. In 1874, Metuchen became a borough and was incorporated as a city on April 15 of that year by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. On November 3rd of that year, it amalgamated with nearby Plainfield to form what is now known as Paramus Township. The merger resulted in the town's population reaching its peak at 13,500 residents; however due to suburbanization over time and other economic factors,[3][4][5][6] Metuchen's population has decreased steadily since its peak.

Metuchen was founded in 1798 as part of an expansion of Elizabethtown Township. The township was renamed Metuchen in 1802 and became a borough on July 1, 1907.
