Metuchen, New Jersey is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 19,898. The township's name is derived from Metuchen Creek and its original location on the border of both Middlesex and Hunterdon Counties. The area that was to become Metuchen was first settled by Europeans in 1714 when landowner Nicholas Sprague purchased two hundred acres (0.81 km2) of land from the Lenape Indians. He named his purchase "Booths Plains", after John Booth, an Englishman who had explored and surveyed the region in 1676-77. In 1834, Anthony Wayne built a gristmill on what is now Main Street in Metuchen Township. In 1841, he added a sawmill to his operation; these mills became among the largest in New Jersey until they were surpassed by those at Paterson in 1865 and Hackensack in 1882. The village of Metuchen began to form around this time as more people began moving into the township and started settling near their homes. In 1868, trustees appointed George Latham as a Village Inspector to oversee village development; he served until 1870 when he became Mayor of Metuchen Village). By 1870, there were about fifty residents living in what would eventually become Metuchen Township (excluding Bound Brook which formed part of Hunterdon County). During World War II, many businesses within Metuchen were closed due to military service or rationing; however, most residents continued to engage in civilian activities such as farming or commerce. Afterward, many new businesses opened up within the confines of town limits while others left for other townships with larger populations. In 1960-1961, nine businesses closed within what would eventually become Mondelēz Corporate Park because of increased competition from larger towns nearby - this included seven stores located inside today's boundaries of Townsquare Media Park which also include One Hudson Place Shopping Center), one place where you could buy cigarettes called Kinnickinnic Mills (now occupied by Giannini's Pizza), six vehicle Wash & Wax facilities serving local farmers markets throughout central NJ operated out side today's boundaries including four on Fayetteville Road - all closed during those years due to lack of business space or technology available at that time not unlike much else experienced during that era outside just technological advancements like internet access unheard then.) 1

Metuchen is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. It was formed on April 1, 1875 from the merger of two other municipalities, Metuchen Township and North Metuchen Township. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to explore this area were French traders and travelers in 1624 who named it "Nouvelle-Angoulême". The area that would become Metuchen was first settled by Scotsmen in 1714 as part of thePurchase of lands from the Lenape people. In 1742, Captain John Stevens landed at what is now Point Pleasant Beach and named it after his home town of Methuen, Massachusetts. He noted an abundance of saltpeter plants here and thought this might be where India's East Indiamen traded with China for opium during the late eighteenth century. British troops burned down Methuen's mills in 1809 during the Quebec campaign against France. British forces then occupied Point Pleasant Beach and built Fort Monmouth on December 14th, 1810 which became known as Fort George after General Sir George Washington's flagship at Boston Harbor during that campaign. In 1825, when Morrisania Township was created from parts of Bergen County, New Jersey (then called Mercer County), Fort Monmouth became part of Morrisania Township. On April 1st, 1875 - one day before Morristown Borough was formed - Metuchen Township merged with North Metuchen Township to form Metuchen Borough; one day after Union Bridge opened between Middlesex County (north) and Bergen County (south). At its creation, Metuchen had a population density of . Metuchen is located east-northeast of Paramus and west-southwest of Hackensack; its total land area is just over . According to the 2010 Census, residents living within township boundaries are 82% White European American (non-Hispanic), 10% Black or African American (non-Hispanic), 5% Asian/Pacific Islander (non-Hispanic), 2% Latino/Latina (of any race), 1% Two or More Races (non-Hispanic). Hispanics make up 9% or about 3 out of every 10 residents while Whites make up 79% or almost all residents according to2010 Census figures. The borough has a Romanian community located near Ridgewood Avenue & Garden State Parkway which has been majority Hungarian since World War II although there are some Slovak speakers among them as well (#711). There are also sizable Portuguese speaking communities in Ridge Road & South Parsippany Roads areas adjacent to Iselin Ave., Old Middletown Rd., & South Kearny Ave., among others (#714& 715). Italian Americans make up about 6%, Germans 8%, Irish 4%, Poles 2%. Dutch Americans make up 2%. All these groups together account for less than 1/5th (~0.3%) percent or less than 01 percent ($2 million) out $30 million statewide economy dependent upon local businesses connected directly to their culture (@ $33 million)
