In 1814, during the American Civil War, Union General John Pemberton's forces destroyed most of what remained of Confederate General Robert Ewell's army at Battle of Ballston Spa before retreating through Morristown. During World War II, much development took place in and around Morristown due to its importance as a munitions production center for the Allies during World War II and its role as part of Operation Varsity which delivered food parcels to Allied troops overseas. In 1957, Interstate 95 was built through town creating new neighborhoods north and east of downtown including Englewood Cliffs; East Brunswick; Highbury Township; Westmorland Borough; Parsippany Township; Rahway Borough; Hackettstown Borough (now Sayreville); Mount Laurel Borough (now Woodbridge Township). These are now known collectively as South Jersey communities outside of Downtown Morristown proper although some residents continue to identify themselves with their original municipalities within that boundaries (e.g., Parsippany Township Residents who live in South Brunswick)). In recent years there have been efforts by local businesses to attract more people back into downtown business districts such as those near I-295/7th Avenue where many popular restaurants once located (Eaton’s Irish Pub being notable among these). This has led to increased traffic congestion on 7th Avenue south between Broad Street and Cleveland Street throughout the morning hours but has not had any significant impact on traffic volumes north or east along 5th Avenue which remain relatively free from congestion despite having several large businesses located there including Macy’s Department Store and Home Depot

Morristown was founded by English settlers in 1732 as Hopewell Township and was incorporated as a borough on March 5, 1837. On November 14, 1874, it became a city under the name of Morristown. On January 1, 1979, it merged with Newark to form the current city of Newark-Morristown. The first settler in what is now Morristown was John Dickinson who arrived there in 1732 and built his house on the present site of Main Street and Market Avenue. The town was named for General James Wilkinson who fought at Saratoga against George Washington in 1777. Wilkinson had come from nearby Bedminster Township where he had been born and raised. The original white settlers were mostly Scottish immigrants who worked on frontier farms until they could purchase land east of Philadelphia which they then developed into major settlements such as Delaware Valley and Easton Township (now Allentown). In 1836 after years of debate between two factions over whether or not to incorporation as a borough or become an independent municipality, Hopewell Township voted to become an independent township with its own board of supervisors which would have included men from both townships but no women or African Americans allowed within its borders In 1840 when Hopewell Township voted to annex part of Westmorland County (later Middlesex County) following the Mexican War, Morristown voted not to annex because it still considered itself an independent township with its own board of supervisors When MORRISTOWN BOROUGH STRUCK NEWARK BY A VOTE OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS ON MARCH 5TH OF 1837 IT WAS TAKEN AS A SIGN THAT THE PEOPLE IN MORRISTOWN WERE READY TO FACE THE FACTS OF LIFE AND TO MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES ABOUT HOW THEY WANT TO LIVE OUT THEIR LIVES
Morristown was founded in 1755 by James Morristown, who arrived from England. The first settlers were farmers and traders who built log huts on the banks of the Delaware River. In 1814, the United States acquired Morristown from Great Britain for $10,000. The town grew rapidly after it became a stop on the New Jersey Railroad. By 1830, Morristown had a population of 2,500 people. After being hit hard by the Panic of 1837, the town lost its prosperity and declined until the mid-19th century when it regained some of its former prominence as an agricultural center.
