The New Providence Air National Guard has been a part of the United States Air Force since 1951. The unit's history can be traced back to World War II when the New Providence AAF was activated as a training squadron at Kelly Field, Texas. Inactivated in 1946, the squadron was reactivated in 1949 as an air defense battalion and trained for combat on Long Island. It was during this time that the New Providence AAF became known as "The Flying Fortress Borough." In 1958, the USAF activated the 2d Bombardment Wing at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska and moved its headquarters to New Providence. The wing replaced Continental Service Command's 3d Bombardment Wing which had been inactive since 1948. Withdrawing from active duty in 1961, the 2d BW operated out of Elmendorf until its activation as a jet-base bomber command in 1968. On 8 October 1951, when America entered into World War II again with Operation Overlord; Commander 1st Allied Tactical Air Forces Atlantic (NORAD) assigned fighter squadrons from eight countries to provide strategic air support for Army Ground Forces operations against Nazi Germany throughout North Africa and Europe [1]. This type of operation is called "Task Force Eagles" because each fighter squadron provides cover for several bombers flying simultaneously over specific areas or targets. One such task force was commanded by Lt Col John H Egan USAAF (Ret'd). Commander 1st AFTAAC assigned Headquarters Squadron No 4 RAFVR(T) toguard U-boat base off Tunisia while other Squadrons flew bombing missions[2]. On 15 November 1945 Lieutenant Colonel Egan organized a detachment of four P-40N's from his 5th Fighter Squadron under Capt Curtis LeMay Jr USAAF (Ret'd) and flew them to Attica AFB NY to participate in Carrier Preps exercise[3]. On 7 December 1945 Major Generallea Major Don Crippen USAF nightclub singer who had performed at Twentieth Century Fox Theater Washington D.C., offered his services free of cost for use by Chief Administrative Officer (CAPO) Western Pacific based at Naples NA with Task Group 11 which included Fourteenth Naval District Hawaii; Task Group 21VP also included 372nd Fighter Bomber Wing Hawaiian Islands providing air cover for naval forces attacking Wake Island located southeast of Guam[4]. On 10 December 1945 CAPO Don Crippen arrived at Naples NA and met Brigadier General George Sledge III USAF commander Tenth Air Force Okinawa who said "Heavens! The New Providence Air Force Base was originally established in 1942 as the Monmouth County Air National Guard Station, NJ. The base was then redesignated as the New Providence Air Force Base in 1957 and it became a United States Air Forces base in 1959. The airbase was renamed again to New Providence AFB on 1/1/1965 and it served as an operational USAF unit until 1973 when it became a USAF Reserve facility. On 1/1/1991, the New Providence AFB reverted back to its original name of Monmouth County AFB. The present-day New Providence AFB serves as one of two active duty USAF installations in the state of New Jersey and is home to three squadrons (the 337th Bomb Wing, 9th Airlift Squadron, and 3509th Missile Squadron) of the 388th Aerospace Expeditionary Wing (AEW).
New Providence, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark metropolitan area. New Providence has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. The first European to visit the town was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1494. The first Englishman to set foot on American soil was John Smith in 1609. In 1764, British General George Washington passed through the town and ordered his troops to disperse the local Indian traders who were aiding the French in their war against America. In 1825, Morrisania Township (later called Gloucester Township) was established within New Providence as a result of an act of the state Legislature which merged Morrisania and Gloucester Townships into one township. The community was organized on October 15, 1828 when trustees of Morristown College voted to adopt a resolution declaring that "a new village will be formed under this auspice – called New Providence." On December 12 of that year, a meeting was held at which it was decided that "the inhabitants thereof should meet together and form themselves into two companies or societies...The objects of these societies shall be chiefly agricultural and moral improvement." The first society met on January 3rd and adopted a constitution defining its goals as including "the promotion of general good through religious worship; education amongst children who are not likely to become idle or vicious; mutual support among friends;" while the second society met on January 17th and adopted a similar constitution but with one amendment - increasing membership from 10 members to 20 members - after learning that another society had been formed without their participation! On February 1st all organizations were registered with James Pemberton as president/manager of said societies with instructions to commence operations within three weeks! - On March 2nd 1800 there were 5 people living here

New Providence was founded in 1764 by Captain John Woolwich and his wife, Elizabeth. The first settler in the town was Nicholas De Witt. New Providence prospered as a slaveholding community and became an important trading post on the Delaware River. In 1801, the town was renamed to honor General James Wilkinson during the War of 1812. After that conflict, New Providence reverted back to its original name. The town experienced a period of growth during World War II, with production of munitions coming from nearby Camden and works located at Monmouth Junction. However, following the war, New Providence declined in population and economy until the early 21st century when it began experiencing revitalization efforts led by Mayor Raymond Buckley and others. Today, New Providence is a vibrant community filled with businesses and restaurants, as well as a number of cultural amenities such as theaters and galleries. It is also home to two high schools - Monmouth County Senior High School and Monmouth County Vocational-Technical school - which together enroll over 1,000 students from all over Monmouth County.
The area now known as New Providence was first settled by English colonists in the early 17th century. The town, originally called "Newburgh", was founded on the banks of the Monmouth River by Sir John Winthrop and his family in 1630. By 1700, the town had a population of around 100 people. In 1713, New Providence became a part of the Province of Masachusetts Bay. In 1764, during the American Revolution, New Providence sided with Britain against America. It was soon after evacuated by British forces and returned to American control. In 1814, New Providence became part of Upper Canada when that province was created from parts of Canada East. From 1834 until 1865, it formed part of Essex County, New Jersey. In 1908, following passage of legislation creating Camden County (then including parts of what is now Camden and Gloucester counties), New Providence became one half of that new county's initial territory; it remained so until 1965 when it split again into Camden and Gloucester counties as a result of statehood changes within New Jersey. During World War II, many local businesses contributed to war efforts such as shipbuilding and munitions production; these endeavors also helped add jobs to local economies. After the war ended in 1945, some residents began moving back into rural areas while others took advantage of suburban development opportunities in nearby Paramus and Hackensack townships. In 1960s-1970s there were efforts spearheaded by then-Mayor Angelo Rossi to redevelop what had been an agricultural community into an urban center focused on industry rather than agriculture; this effort failed but revived interest in redevelopment later in the decade when Rossi left office and new mayors took over leadership position at various points throughout the decade
