When the United States Air Force was founded in 1947, it had only two squadrons. The 1st Fighter Squadron and the 2nd Fighter Squadron. One of the first tasks of the Air Force was to establish airfields so that pilots could train and fight in a war against Nazi Germany. In 1951, the 3rd Bombardment Wing was activated at Lackland AFB in Austin, Texas. It was part of Strategic Air Command (SAC). In 1957, SAC became Tactical Air Command (TAC), which controlled all American bomber forces. In 1961, TAC activated its own fighter squadron called the 121st Fighter Squadron at Orchard Lake AFB in New York State. This squadron would become known as “The Flaming Lips” because of their colorful flying uniforms and high-flying operations during The Cuban Missile Crisis. On July 26, 1963, President John F Kennedy authorized Operation Neptune Spear which involved USAF bombers bombing North Vietnam for the first time since World War II. The purpose of this attack was to demonstrate to North Vietnamese leader Kim Jong Il that America remained a nuclear superpower and that he would not be able to threaten American soil with his weapons without consequence.

The United States Air Force has a long and proud history in Newark, New Jersey. From its beginnings as the Newark Volunteer Fire Department in 1917 to becoming an integral part of the National Guard in 1935, the USAF has been an important community partner since World War II. Today, the USAF is still a critical part of the local community with its presence in many sectors including education, research and development, health care and more. In honor of this longstanding partnership, we are excited to release our air force gift history in Newark. From 1917 to 1935, the Newark Volunteer Fire Department was led by Capt. John J Smith who served as Whitaker’s Battalion Chief from 1917-1920 and Captain-in-Chief from 1920-1935. As Captain Smith led his battalion through some of Newark’s most challenging times – such as being one of only two volunteer fire departments to be granted city government funding in 1922 – he left a lasting legacy for his department and city alike. The friendship between Capt. John Smith and Mayor James Dolan is well known within the city today - both men were great friends who helped each other during their time as mayors. This friendship was continued when Capt. John Smith passed away in 1936; Dolan named his successor “John J Smith III” in his memory*. In 1935, after years of hard work by members of the NJ State Senate subcommittee on municipal affairs chaired by Seneca Wallace (D), it was announced that The United States Air Force would be established under Section 319(a)of title 49US Code! This new organization would serve primarily as a training ground for pilots until eventually becoming operational! It was through this organization that Sgt Maj Cecil Epps became commander on July 1st 1937 – just three months after Patterson had been assigned commander at Wright Field*. That same year saw another milestone for Lt Col Leroy Johnson when he became deputy commanding general adjutant general at Andrews AFB*, making him one of America’s top military leaders! Lt Col Johnson played an instrumental role during World War II – most notably leading Operation Torch which successfully landed Allied forces on Sicily* on October 10th 1943.* He later became Commanding General Europe Theater Area where he oversaw all combat operations throughout Nazi Germany until May 1945(*). Atrocities committed against American soldiers during WWII continue to haunt us today - examples include Operation Neptune Spear which took place near Frankfurt am Main on April 7th 1945(*). Newark is a city in New Jersey, United States. The population was 731,569 as of the 2010 Census, and it is the fifth-largest city in New Jersey. Newark's metropolitan area has a population of 2,815,000. Newark also contains the planned community of Plaquemine Park on its southern border. Newark began as an agricultural village on the newly formed East River peninsula that straddles present day Newark and Plaquemine Counties in Monmouth and Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The village was known for its fertile soil and its rich colonial history dating back to 1664 when English colonists founded Elizabethtown (later Elizabeth) on the site of what would later become Newark. In 1871, two years after North America’s first electric power company was established in Newark with three stations – Oneonta (now Orange), Clifton Junction (now Paterson), and Caldwell – William Moulton Macy opened his new department store at the intersection of Clinton Street and Broad Street in what would later become downtown Newark. The store became one of America’s most successful commercial enterprises with over 100 stores throughout New Jersey before it merged with JCPenney in 1984 to form Macy’s Incorporated. The early 21st century saw significant redevelopment within Downtown Newark following enactment by Mayor Cory Booker of then-new Municipal Code §2-101 which called for a comprehensive plan to revitalize both business districts along First Avenue from Washington Boulevard eastward including demolition or modification of existing buildings Concourse East into an open plaza/ promenade featuring restaurants/bars/nightlife serving local cuisine It took until 2013 for this vision to be realized when City Council adopted zoning changes that created several blocks bounded by West Side Highway (Route 9) between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue North; Pratt & Hoboken Streets between First Avenue South and Fourth Avenue North; Euclid Street between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue North; Atlantic Boulevard between First avenue southwesterly boundary line northeasterly boundary line Additionally sections were added bounded by Interstate 95 northbound access road to McGraw Hill Educational Complex eastbound access road from Route 215 northbound; Middlesex County lines: Union County Line: Secaucus Road eastbound access road from I-95 west bound; Bergen County Line: Ridgewood Drive eastbound access road from Interstate 95 south bound Finally portions were added bounded by George Washington Bridge Tollway eastbound access road connecting I-95 northbound to Interstate 285 west bound
The USAF has a rich history of giving gifts to others. The first gift given by the USAF was an airplane in 1935. It was the F-4C Phantom Fighter. This plane was donated by General Curtis LeMay, who served as the Chief of Staff of the USAF at that time. The aircraft is still in use today and is used for training purposes. Other notable gifts include: - A KC-135 Stratotanker in 1990 - A Boeing 747 airplane in 2002 In 2006, the USAF gifted two Super Hornet fighter jets to Saudi Arabia in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Saudi independence from Iraq. These planes were made available as donations to the Saudi Air Force and are now part of King Salman’s air force. In 2008, it was announced that the United States would gift an Airbus A330 jetliner to Bahrain for use as a support squadron for Bahrain's air force. This plane is used for transport duties and has been nicknamed “The Boeing 747 That Changed History” because it is one of only two modern jets ever gifted to a country underdeveloped at that time (the other being a Gulfstream G650).
One of the first gifts given to an air force officer was a rifle. This gift, which was called the Model 1903 Springfield Rifle, helped define the role of an airman in World War I and II. The air force also gave officers aviator glasses and other equipment that allowed them to fly.
Newark, New Jersey was once a thriving port town on the Delaware River. It quickly became known as the "City of Opportunity" due to its advantageous location, particularly in relation to Philadelphia and other industrial towns around the river. Newark's political and economic power soon surpassed that of its larger rivalPhiladelphia. In 1879, Newark became part of the newly created United States after becoming an official city following a referendum. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s thanks to waves of immigrants from all over Europe who came to work in Newark's burgeoning garment industry and business sector. By 1930, Newark had become one of America's leading urban centers, boasting a population of over 200,000 people. However, during World War II Newark was heavily bombed by American bombers and sustained significant damage; this forced many residents to flee their homes in search of new opportunity. Many factories closed down in post-war Newark, contributing significantly to its decline as an economically active city throughout the 1960s and 1970s. However, recent efforts by local officials to revive the city have started to reverse these trends; in 2016 Newark placed eighth among U.S. cities for total job growth between 2015-2020 (1). Newark is located on both banks of the Delaware River – which makes it very convenient for trade with other parts of Pennsylvania and New York City as well as Philadelphia (the capital). The river also made way for intensive farming activity during its early years due to its strategic location; today much lower levels of water provide ideal soil conditions for planting crops such as corn or soybeans while reducing flooding risks caused by heavy rains or typhoons. In addition to being central point for trade within what was then British North America, Newark also played an important role in Native American cultures through religious ceremonies and copper mining operations dating back centuries ago – activities that continue today albeit under different legal frameworks (Warburg & Sussa 1995).
