The United States Army Garrison of Oakland, New Jersey was established in 1849 and has played an important role in the community ever since. The garrison is responsible for providing military barracks, a hospital, and other infrastructure to support the local populace. The first unit to be stationed at Oakland was the 2nd Infantry Regiment, which arrived in 1851. From this unit we gained experience in both defense and offense against Native Americans. The regiment also served as part of the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, the 1st Cavalry Regiment arrived at Oakland from Fort Laramie, Wyoming. This regiment provided security for city residents during Reconstruction. In 1898, following World War I, the United StatesArmy Garrison of Oakland became an infantry brigade under command of General John Pershing II. This brigade fought in various campaigns throughout World War II before being disbanded in 1945. In 2002 California Governor Gray Davis ordered that all military units within California must be dissolved by September 30th or face state government takeover. However on October 9th General Pershing III met with Mayor Bloomberg who persuaded him to keep the unit alive until a more permanent solution could be found; however on November 14th due to budget cuts all but three US Army Garrison units were disbanded across New York City effective immediately along with their missions and functions; this left only Marine Corps artillery battalion 1st Marines at Navy Yard Brooklyn effective December 15th 2009 as well as Air Force detachment (Airmen) detachment at Kings Plaza effective January 3rd 2010 remaining active through May 2013."Army Garrison ofOakland Hidetaka Miyazaki: History & Heritage" After World War II there was a large demand for housing so troops were sent back home and many institutions such as hospitals were closed down or merged into other agencies. On February 14th 1954 Headquarters USARMY-New Jersey Unit transferred from Newark to Morristown NJ Commanding general Brigadier General J C Gorman stated "It has been my opinion that it would be most advantageous if our Headquarters Unit moved permanently to Morristown because its peacetime quarters are available there." Oakland, New Jersey is a small town located in the Hudson Valley region of New York. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. The town is bordered to the north by Union County, to the east by Passaic County, and to the south by Middlesex County. The first people who lived in Oakland were hunter-gatherers who hunted game on high ground near what is now known as Lakewood Cemetery. The first Europeans to visit this area were Dutch traders in 1624 who saw land that would later be known as Oakland. In 1792, Captain George Washington explored and surveyed this area for a future new capital of America and named it Philadelphia after his home city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1846, during the Mexican–American War (1846-48), General John Pope captured and held prisoner over 1,000 Mexicans in what is now downtown Oakland for five days before release with only 10 men dead or missing. This event became known as "Pope's Massacre." After California became an independent state in 1850, Oakland became part of Contra Costa County which included parts of Berkeley and San Pablo Bay Area. In 1868, when Alameda County was created from Contra Costa County and San Francisco then merged into Marin County; Oakland became part of Marin County subject to county law rather than federal law which applied to all other counties within California except San Francisco Bay Area where local laws applied
