Ocean City is a town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,856 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Ocean County and third-most populous municipality in New Jersey after Newark and Jersey City. The town of Ocean City was first settled by Europeans in 1664 as part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1834, it became an incorporated town under the name "Ocatai". The town grew even faster thanks to its growth in tourism which helped support the economy during both world wars.During World War II, Ocean City played a key role in helping liberate Nazi-occupied Europe from fascism. As part of Operation Overlord (the Allied invasion of Normandy), American forces used local beaches for training purposes before landing in France on June 6th 1944. German forces were able to retake many coastal towns and villages throughout northwestern France prior to liberation; however, no such offensive occurred against Atlantic Beach near Point Pleasant than what took place at Normandy’s other beachhead - Calvados - less than three miles away from where OceanCity now stands.Following World War II, much development took place within the boundaries of present-day OceanCity including the construction of Interstate 95 and Monmouth County’s first shopping mall – Aventura Mall – which opened in 1969 adjacent to then-Seaport High School now known as “Aquarium Park” inside what is now called Municipal Waterfront Park across from Borough Hall). Additionally new housing developments were built along Route 95A (now Veterans Memorial Boulevard) which served as a major artery for commuters heading into New York City or Philadelphia during this time period In 1957, Atlantic County seceded from New Jersey and formed its own government becoming known as “The Free State Of Atlantic County” In 1967 Monmouth County lost its status as a part of New Jersey when it passed an act creating municipal corporations serving area instead In 2013–14 together with neighboring Avalon merged into one giant city known as "The Hub"
