The Palisades Park Army Reserve Unit is one of the oldest units in the New Jersey Army National Guard. The unit was organized on July 1, 1918, at Palisades Heights as part of the merger of two separate regiments, the 125th Infantry and 163rd Infantry. On December 12, 1921, the regiment became a brigade under command of Major General John H. Pershing. The regiment served in World War I and World War II as part of both American Expeditionary Forces and United States Armed Forces. It played an important role in both wars by providing manpower for military campaigns and deployments throughout Europe and Asia. The regiment has also participated in numerous state-sponsored events such as the Pennsylvaniasoldiers' Memorial Day Parade and Christmas parade. The regiment has been formally accredited with honors by both the New Jersey Military Academy and West Point Military Academy. In addition to its ceremonial functions, battalion members have served various operational assignments including relief work during Hurricane Sandy (2012), guard duty during inauguration ceremonies (2009-10), disaster response following hurricanes Irene (2011) and Katrina (2005). The Palisades Park, New Jersey history begins in 1777 when the Palisades Heights estate was purchased by George Washington. The area now known as Palisades Park was first settled by Native Americans and was part of the Lenape Indian reservation. In 1795, the United States Congress created a park east of Philadelphia called Westchester County Park. The land for what is now Palisades Park was bought from the Lenape in 1800 and became part of Westchester County. In 1814, President James K. Polk designated Palisade Park as a national reserve, which gave it international importance. In 1875, Mayor Abram Beers adopted a resolution to create a public playground on the former Lenape encampment at Sunset Hill in eastern Westchester County. As development increased along Sunrise Boulevard and State Road 471 near the park, beavers began inhabiting ponds within its boundaries and began providing water for various street fountains that sprang up throughout town during this time period. In 1923, construction began on Castle Gardens which would become one of America's most well-known public parks with its large lawns, tennis courts, and swimming pool. The park underwent significant expansion over the years including new roads and trails built to accommodate increasing traffic levels; today it remains one of New York City's largest recreational areas with more than 12 million visitors annually. During World War II many soldiers were stationed at Fort Hamilton in nearby Elizabethtown Township while other troops were located at nearby MacArthur Barracks (later MacArthur Homes). Soldiers living in unitselves or housing barracks near Fort Hamilton developed close relationships with their families inside and outside of FortHamilton through activities such as playing ball on Sundays after services or going for walks together at sunrise or sunset before returning home to eat dinner alone or with friends afterwards. This type of relationship is often referred to as "Fort Hamilton social life."
