Pershing ordered the deployment of American forces to Europe to fight in World War I. The division was stationed at Camp Borden in Newark and then moved to camp Elmira on November 4th where it remained until December 6th when it arrived at the front line near Arras, France.
Passaic is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Passaic was founded by Dutch settlers in 1664 as "Het Vechtgebied", meaning "the Walnut Grove". In 1714, the Swedes established aFortress here and passed through what is now Passaic on their way to establishing Fort Christina in Stockton, California. The first English settlement in Passaic took place in 1695 when Captain John Smith and his party landed there from Plymouth Colony with military supplies and men to find a route to India. They built an encampment on the east side of Hackensack River where they named it Garden Township (now Union). The first post office was established at Garden Township in 1701. In 1834, Essex County was formed from portions of Passaic and Bergen counties; Garden Township became Essex County Borough (although still part of Passaic County). On July 1, 1837, Burlington Railroad connected Newark and Camden with Philadelphia via nearby Hackensack; this made Garden Township an important transportation center for both cities. As Burlington grew more powerful and its services expanded into other municipalities across New Jersey, so too did Garden Township's importance within county government. In 1893, Essex County abolished boroughs within itself and divided Garden Township into four wards: North Ward (including Paramus), South Ward (West Orange), East Ward (Rahway), and West Ward (East Rutherford). Today all but one ward are contained within Rahway Municipal District #2 which includes Harrisonburg Borough as well as parts of Maplewood Heights Borough and Saddle Brook Borough . Passaic, New Jersey is a small township in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 11,569. The township was formed from portions of Bergen and Essex townships on April 1, 1814. It is named for James Morin, a French Loyalist who had helped organize the American Revolution in New Jersey. The first European to set foot on what is now Passaic Township was French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1609. On November 21, 1764, George Washington and his army passed through the township as they marched south to Trenton on their way to Yorktown. In 1795-97 during the Sullivan Expedition British troops burned many homes and farms in Passaic Township because some residents had refused to support General John Sullivan's invasion of America against the revolutionary forces led by Benedict Arnold. On July 10, 1814, when Morris became an Indian trader with the Mohawk nation and began selling goods along the Susquehanna River at Paterson he requested that his name be changed from "Morin" to "Pasasio". The request went unheeded so he decided to use "Pasasio" until it was changed again in 1821 after being anglicized by William Butler Yeats while serving as an interpreter for Ulysses S. Grant during his service as Ulysses S. Grant's adviser on Indian Affairs
