As the oldest city in New Jersey and home to a large number of coffee roasters, Rahway has a rich coffee history that can be traced back to 1802. At that time, Rahway was the site of one of the first coffeehouses in America. The first coffee shop was established by Nicholas Gendron and his brothers, Isaac and John. It operated out of a small house on Hasbrouck Street in Rahway until 1807. In 1808, Nicholas Gendron opened what is now known as Gendron’s Coffee House at 5th and Main Streets in Rahway. This coffee shop became renowned for its high-quality beans and Its delicious potable products. In 1865, John Fenton opened JFenton’s Coffee House which served fresh roasted coffee all day long. This establishment quickly became well-known throughout the area for its great quality beans and delicious potable products. In 1892, Martin Luther King Jr.'s father founded his own grocery store on Market Street in Rahway called King's Hardware & Feed Store (later renamed MLK Jr.'s Grocery). This store continued to serve excellent brewed coffee until it closed in 1984. After King's Hardware & Feed Store closed, several other local businesses began serving excellent brewed coffee including Black Diamond Coffee Company (later known as D'Angelo Bros.), The Dutchman’s Coffee Shop (later known as The Dutchman's Pub), and Joe's Coffee House (now known as Joe's Café). Over time, many different roasters have been located in Rahway including Blue Bottle Coffee Company (now part of Starbucks), Four Barrel Coffee Company (now defunct), The Chocolate Factory espresso bar/coffeehouse/café (), Stumptown Roastery & Cafe (), Six Degrees Brewing Co., Green Mountain Espresso (), Alkaline Brewing Co., Old World Distillery (), Dark Horse Brewery ().
Rahway is a small town in New Jersey on the border of Middlesex County and Union County. The population was 2,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Fridaysburg-Middlesex, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Rahway area was first settled by English colonists in 1676 as part of Middlesex Township. In 1846, Rahway became a separate township, and in 1874 it merged with Union Township to form Rahway Township. The township name was changed to Rahway in 1951. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,824 people, 1,043 households, and 818 families residing in the township. The population density was 158 people per square mile (60/km²). There were 1,181 housing units at an average density of 68 per square mile (25/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98% White and 0% African American. Hispanic or Latino
