The United States Army was founded on November 15, 1775, by George Washington and his generals in Philadelphia. The first U.S. military campaign occurred in 1776 when General Washington led an army against the British in the Battle of Saratoga. The Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris which ended the Revolutionary War on September 3, 1783. In 1812, Napoleon Bonaparte invaded America and captured New York City; American forces met them at Yorktown and drove him out of America. The United States had a large standing army until very recently because it was one of only six countries to maintain a standing military throughout all of its history. The first American military gift to be given to another country came from tenderest friend and comrade-in-arms John Adams to France in 1794 during the French Revolution. Adams wanted to show his support for France while also showing that he could protect America’s interests should France become involved in any future conflict with Europe. This was followed by gifts from Great Britain (1796), Spain (1802), Russia (1805), Denmark (1807), Sweden (1809), Norway (1814) and Austria-Hungary (1904). These gifts were made as part of celebrations or commemorative ceremonies for major events such as victory over Napoleon or peace treaties signed after World War I. Ramsey, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,567 at the 2010 census. Ramsey was incorporated as a village on May 30, 1837. It became a town on November 3 of the same year. The name comes from Ramsey Township and DeWitt's Purchase angling grounds east of the township line and west of Princeton Junction. The first settler in what is now Ramsey Township was John Beckstead who arrived there on July 14, 1798 with his wife Margaret and two children John and Elizabeth. He had come from Great Britain to farm land that he had been given by Colonel James Wilkinson of Perth Amboy, NJ. By 1800 Beckstead had four children: John (1799–1856), Sarah (1801-1872), Hannah (1803-1868) and Betsy (baptized December 15, 1805). In 1827 Ramseys first school opened under teacher Elijah WeymouthJr., who taught for one year before moving to open a school in Rahway which continued until 1828 when it closed due to lack of funds. In 1830 Isaac Dunham set up a sawmill in what is now part of Livingston County but it failed because not enough people wanted to buy wood needed for the milling process; however this didn't stop him from continuing production until 1840 when he moved his factory to Clearwater creek where he operated it until his death in 1861. In 1850 Anthony Auerbach settled in what is now Biggertown and started selling flour while also constructing a home which still stands today named after him – Anthony Auerbach House & Village Park Bluffs Road – within walking distance of both Biggertown High School and Midland State University Old Main Campus
