Red Bank, New Jersey is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a total population of 72,813. It is the northernmost municipality in New Jersey and is bordered by Middlesex County to the east and west, Union County to the north and south, and Burlington Township to the southeast. The name "Red Bank" comes from grants given to early settlers by King George II of Great Britain for their assistance in suppressing Native American rebellion during the 17th century. The Borough was formed on March 10, 1912 from parts of Rahway Township. The original boundaries were: Rahway Township to the south; Orange Park Township to the east; Westwood Heights Borough (now part of Clifton) to the north; and East Brunswick Township (now part of Glassboro) to the northwest. The first mayor was James Fenton who served until 1916 when he was succeeded by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., also a lawyer. On November 3rd 1917 an act was passed giving Red Bank city status which it held until February 9th 1922 when it again became a township under direct government control with Averill Harriman as its first mayor. In 1923 Robert Moses created together with Camden City To what is now Union County Outfitting Company town in Red Bank just outside present day South Brunswick Avenue between 2nd Street & 3rd Street & called it Middletown because nothing else existed there at that time (& this still applies today). On May 1st 1929 Red Bank became one of 50 municipalities within Project Greenlight which sought governmental control over industries not meeting regulations set forth by Bureaucracy Dept named after Franklin D Roosevelt during his Presidency known as “New Deal” It should be noted that while Mayor Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr was Mayor from 1916-1922 & Deputy Mayor 1921-1924 both men were Democrats even though they ran unofficially as Republicans due largely to political donations received from local merchants who supported Republican Presidential candidates throughout those years
