On July 4th, 1776, while militiaops under command of Colonel Nicholas Westbury fought a battle against American forces led by American General Nathanael Greene at White Sands on Long Island off New York City's southern tip - one day after America declared war on Great Britain - about 1/3 of all males age 15 or younger living within three miles (5 km) of Princeton town limits joinedprising enough to form an armed company called "The Princeton Volunteers" which pledged allegiance only to Princeton – not Washington or Boston as had been advertised! As news spread throughout Princeton about this treasonous act against their townspeople – reportedly including some members of Congress – local residents quickly mobilized into militias under Captain Nathanial Payne’s command which fought bravely but ultimately lost when Greene surrounded and destroyed their entrenchments!
