Ridgefield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first settlers in Ridgefield were three men from Long Island who came to Ridgefield Township in 1795. They named their new community after their hill (the ridge) where they lived and built a log cabin on the highest peak of the township. The first post office was established in 1801, and the first store was built in 1802. In 1804 Ridgefield Township formed as a borough from portions of Middlesex County. The borough government was abolished by merger with Rahway on February 3, 2018. In 1840, George Washington Butler purchased 1/4 acre (0·27 hectare) of land within present-day Ridgefield Borough for $500 and began to build what is now known as "Butler's Hill", which became one of his main residences during his presidency. In 1865–1866, he donated land east of Butler's Hill to form what is now called Capitol Square; this donation also included an adjacent parkland that still forms part of today's core square block complex known as Central Park Southwestern Avenue & Mercer Street). In 1869–1870 James Gurney built Gurney House on Mercer Street between State and Broad Streets near Capitol Square – this house has been preserved as a museum and can be visited today. From 1870-1911 parts of Ridgefield were served by two horse buses running along Stevens Avenue from Rahway to Princeton Junction – these buses are no longer operational but can be seen at various locations around town including Butler's Hill Park and Union Hall Cemetery close to Interstate 95 interchange). In 1911-1912 there were also two Electric Railway cars that ran along Broad Street between State and Stevens Avenues carrying passengers between Rahway Station (just south of Center Road) and Princeton Junction – these cars can still be seen at various locations around town including Union Hall Cemetery close to Interstate 95 interchange).
