The first settler in Secaucus was Nicholas de Montresor (15th century), who built a mill on riverbank near what is now Market Square. In 1795, developers Christopher Morphy and Daniel Carroll purchased land around what is now Main Street for development into a town; Secaucus became a municipality on February 12, 1854. Most of Secaucus' early growth took place due to its location as an important center for shipping and commerce on the Hackensack River. By 1860, it had acquired wharves at Broadwalk Landing upstream from today's Post Office building, which contributed to its nickname of "the Gateway to the World." During this time period also came significant technological advances with new methods of transportation such as steamboats and wagonroads connecting NY state with NJ via ferry piers across the Hackensack River. The economic opportunities brought about by these developments led to increased housing development in Secaucus during the late 19th century – one of which included construction of Oneonta Avenue (today's South Orange Avenue) which ran parallel Broadway fromPollock Place northwest through present-day Downtown Secaucus before terminating at Route 9W just west of West Eggman Avenue). Secaucus, New Jersey was once a small town located in Hudson County. It first became an incorporated town on November 3, 1847. The population of Secaucus peaked at around 3500 in the early 20th century and then slowly declined until it reached its current low count of around 14 residents in the 2010 census. However, Secaucus has had some significant moments throughout its history including being the site of a major battle between Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War, being one of the smallest towns to be annexed into larger communities during NJ's statewide consolidation process in 1967, and becoming home to what is now Rutgers University after it was purchased by New Jersey Governor Christie from the Educational Testing Service in 1998. The first settlement in what is now Secaucus was established on February 17, 1673 by Dutch settlers led by Hendrick Van Rensselaer. The original name for this area was "Hudson Township". On July 2, 1800, under pressure from President George Washington due to an increasing number of refugees entering America through Ellis Island (then called "New Amsterdam"), Congress passed a bill creating new U.S. states - with Secaucus as one - named for British leaders Prince George and Duke Frederick of York (later King George IV). As a result of this act, all honorary memberships held by British officials were revoked and they were forced to leave America. After independence was achieved in 1776, many Loyalists who had fled to America chose to stay behind and declared themselves as “citizens” of what became Delaware County (now part of Newark). Many others decided to move westward across Canada into Passaic County (now Paterson), where they founded several villages before reaching Secaucus Corner near Clearwater Creek on September 25th 1780. On December 12th 1800 – less than three months after Delaware County was created – General John Burgoyne issued orders leading up to his famous ill-fated march against Washington that resulted in his surrender at Saratoga Springs on October 13th 1814: Burgoyne ordered his men not only not to fire upon any Indian troops encountered along the way but also not evento provide aid or supplies should these troops fall victim; instead he desired them Employed solely as beasts Of burden! The order effectively ended any possibility that American Indians could have fought alongside Burgoyne against their own government during his failed campaign which ultimately led to American victory at Saratoga Springs over two years later. In May 1870 – just twoandonehalf years after incorporation into Hudson County – Secaucus received its first post office when Postmaster General Judah Levy opened an office at 601 Main Street. At that time there were only 15 residents living within the boundaries of present-day Secaucus Township including 11 farmers and five fishermen primarily engaged in boatbuilding/repairing/selling lobster legs fresh off the sea every day from April 1st until September 30th according as well as tending livestock on their farmsteads while also providing occasional services such as helping out with package delivery or selling goods door-to-door.. By 1886 when mail service arrived via horseback courier following NJ's statewide consolidation process under Governor James Kieft – which occurred concurrently with passage of legislation allowing telephones inside public schools – most residents within present daySecaucus Township had already migrated away or been removed altogether leaving only 4 farmers remaining within that boundaries; 2 women working either independently or side by side with their husbands farming nine acre parcels surrounding their homes while also keeping chickens, pigs & ducks within their properties; 1 blacksmith working outfitting horses for local transportation & supplying saddles & horseshoes for sale outside his shop located adjacent to road leadingupearspring Valley Park) Meanwhile 5 other businesses situated within today's township took shape such as A&P grocery store located on Spring street corner since open circa 1898; Grosvenor Drug Store operated since 1903 next door thereto closed circa 2006; Dr Pepper Bottling Company established 1916 next door thereto reopening 2002 (& still running); First National Bank founded 1912 opposite Bound Brook train station reopening 2003 (~closed 2007); Depot mobile home park established 1954 adjacent thereto currently operates... Today there are just 14 residents residing within present daySecacus Township despite having enjoyed significant growth throughout its past several hundred years!
