The United States Infantry Volunteers was a volunteer infantry regiment of the American Civil War. It was first organized in Somers Point, New Jersey on October 25, 1861. The regiment disbanded on July 15, 1865. The U.S. Infantry Volunteers was created from militia units that volunteered to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War. These units were often made up of men from Somers Point, New Jersey because this town had a large enough population to support an infantry regiment and it had a military presence since 1772 when Captain John Norris founded the first Regiment of Militia in what is now West New York County, NY. In 1862, Congress authorized one hundred companies of volunteer infantry soldiers to be raised in New Jersey and these troops were known as the "New Jersey Volunteer Infantry". In December 1862, General George Buell ordered all artillery batteries within five miles of Manhattan to be divided into two columns and placed under command of Brigadier Generals David Hunter and Nathaniel Lyon respectively; these divisions would march towards Philadelphia while artillery pieces manned by volunteers remained at their respective positions around Manhattan providing cover for the column en route thereto. On November 25th Governor Andrew Johnson issued an order disbanding all state militias and calling for 100 more militiamen from throughout New Jersey to join Federal forces; these men would be known as "the National Guard". On December 10th President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order ordering all volunteer infantry regiments along with Artillery Companies D (from Brooklyn), G (from Staten Island), H (from Hasbrouck Heights) and I (from White Plains) located east of Boston mustered into Federal service effective January 1st 1863; this order also called for each company's captain or major-general commanding to report directly to Washington D C immediately upon muster out instead of going through their unit's colonel who reported through divisional commanders. In March 1863 General Lew Wallace ordered all companies equipped with cannons west of Baltimore mustered into Federal service atonce he realized that Confederate troops were moving northward towards Baltimore using this area as a supply line; accordingly Wallace ordered his forces southward across Maryland leading eventually to Camden County where he encamped his army at Mount Hope on April 14th 1863 awaiting orders from Washington D C which never arrived after Confederate General Robert E Lee attacked Maryland June 12th 1863 numbering up to 5500 men soundly defeated near Monmouth Junction losing over 1000 men including most senior officers including Confederate Secretary OFWar Henry Halleck who retreated back across Potomac River upstream from Antietam Campaign leaving behind some 6000 survivors total losses for both armies numbering about 30% casualties against Confederate Troops numbering only 13%. As a resultof this battle Montgomery County lost 2/3rds its entire population with over 60% males killed or wounded making it one of largest forced migrations ever faced by any county in America resulting in displacement and loss totaling $5 million dollars very much affecting local economy lasting many years afterwards!

The USS Somers Point (LST-626) was an amphibious assault ship which served in the United States Navy during World War II. She was built at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Shipbuilding Division,on Staten Island, New York, and was commissioned on 10 May 1944. The ship was named for Captain John A. Somers of the LST-521 which had been sunk by Japanese forces off Samar Island on 16 May 1942.
