The ZIP code for Somers Point is 07702. The first Europeans to arrive in what are now Somers Point were Dutch colonists who landed in 1614 and 1615. English colonists arrived about 1701 and founded a small town here that became known as "Somersbury". In 1802, the Township of Somersbury was formed from part of Middlesex County and became an independent municipality with its own government and school board. In 1868, Rutgers University moved to New Brunswick and many students, faculty, workers and families decided to move too. The first post office was established at "Middlesex" on the banks of the river in 1869; it continued to be served until 1915 when it was renamed "Rutgersville". In 1870, a gristmill called "Plymouth" was built on land which still sitsuate within present-day Somers Point. Plymouth mill closed around 1971 but left behind evidence including an intact engine house and two sets of sails still visible today on the old millpile (now used as a storage shed). In 1903, one of America's largest coal companies named Morgan & Company merged with Pennsylvania Coal Company forming what would become Penn Central Railroad which connected Manhattan with Reading through what is now Elizabethtown Township (later Morristown). This new railroad brought jobs - some 20 thousand men worked at Penn Central's trackside factories between 1901-1964 - but also generated large amounts of pollution that caused health problems for decades afterwards. In 1916 a group led by developer John Pappalardo bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of beach front property bordered by North Beach Road on one side and Long Branch Harbor on the other for $1 million dollars believing he could turn it into a resort town using his connections to New York City politicians then running control over Philadelphia's transportation system – this effort failed although development started only after World War I ended officially giving rise to modern day Somers Point as we know it today On October 25th 1908 local citizens passed resolutionsboroughs@newjerseymailandinfo calling for incorporation into Princeton Junction due largely to lack of referendum results from earlier years following various disputes over township boundaries followed by name changes including: Atlantic Highlands Borough 1917; South Bound Brook Township 1923; Bound Brook Borough 1929; Rahway 1924; Hackensack 1912; Perth Amboy 1931 etc.). On November 4th 1908 incorporation papers were filed with both Monmouthshire Township Incorporation Committee (#2) in Princeton Junction under the name “Somersport” being registered therewith on January 2nd 1909 having been incorporated therein as per Resolution No #2 dated October 25th 1908 . On December 7th 1911 residents voted overwhelmingly not to annex any other townships within Middlesex County due mainly because they felt that such annexation would violate their autonomy as Spartansburg residents while also infringing upon their right to sell liquor directly outside their homes without state or county regulation . On February 3rd 1915 legislative acts were finally passed incorporating all five municipalities constituting modern day Somers Point into one contiguous entity having been so designated by orderGovt.#1 dated March 30th 1915 followed by processofincorporation taking place throughout region effective April 15th 1915 thereby becoming an official municipality within our borders viz.. Newark , UMass , NJ ; Maple Shade Township 1918 ; South Bound Brook Borough 1929 ; Rahway 1924 ; Hackensack 1912 ; Perth Amboy 1931 etc.). Somers Point is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,643 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is located on the east coast of Long Island, between Elizabeth and Newark. It is part of the Princeton-Union City- Hackensack metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Somers Point were Dutch traders and fishermen who discovered a land route from New Amsterdam (now Albany) through present day Delaware Bay to Long Island in 1624. One of their vessels, the "Nieuw Amsterdam", made landfall on October 14th, 1624 on what is now known as State Road 5 near modern day Middlebush Village. The town began as a small community near where today's Maritime Hall stands and was named after Nicholas Somers who served as Deputy Governor of New Netherland during this time period. A group of settlers known as The Dutch Reformed Church founded by John Smyth arrived at the same time and established themselves in what is now downtown Somers Point along with some other early families including the Van Riper family and Tryon family among others. By 1710 there were over 100 settlers living in what are today downtown Somers Point with about 60% being male proprietors or farmers while 40% were women servant class owners or heads of households . At that time there were two schools within the boundaries - one for boys operated by Father Morelli (later priest emeritus) & one for girls co-operated by Mrs Ann Richards which opened on September 12th 1711 under auspices of Revd Dr John Browne . In 1715 an act was passed providing for township government with all residents voting notary publics appointed by Township Council to record deeds etc In 1721 Captain Cornelius Hayes landed his ship "Castine" at Sandy Hook Key & explored Staten Island before returning home via Paterson Landing in Trenton NJ giving local Indians an initial taste of white civilization before they withdrew again several weeks later when he failed to return According to legend Captain Hayes may have been lost overboard during his voyage but evidence suggests he actually reached Staten Island safely & stayed for some weeks before sailing back home
Somers Point is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Somers Point was first settled by English colonists in 1664. It became an incorporated municipality on July 1, 1834. In 1865, the community was renamed for Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter after his death at sea while convoying supplies to Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In 1870, a railroad bridge crossing the river spanned it and made transportation easier between Newark and Princeton; however, this rail line was abandoned within a few years and most commerce passed through nearby Rahway instead. The town's only remaining buildings are its two churches which were built in 1877-78 and remain standing today; as well as a small number of residences dating back to before 1900 or earlier which still stand today but have been largely rehabilitated or replaced with newer homes. The original post office building still stands across from where it once stood on Market Street outside of present day Somers Point Borough Hall; it has been used variously as a schoolhouse (1892-1910), fire hall (1914-1945), borough hall (1975-1978) and municipal offices (1982-1984).
