Somers Point is a town in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. Somers Point has been inhabited by Native Americans since Pre-Columbian times. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and he named it "Verrazzano's Island." There were no permanent settlers until 1785 when John Morris built a mill on the riverbank which became known as Morris' Mill. Somers Point has had many industries over its history including: shipbuilding and repair, coal mining, papermaking, brick manufacturing and engineering. In 1892 the Morris Paper Company was founded which became one of the largest paper companies in America before being bought by J.P Morgan in 1913. At its peak it employed more than 10,000 people and made paper products such as T-shirts for Ford Motor Company and Chevrolet automobiles. The company went bankrupt in 1944 but reopened two years later as Alcoa Steel Corporation with production continuing until 1986 when it closed down again due to competition from China. It reopened as an engine manufacturing plant late in 2000s but ceased production early this decade The town received global attention after Hurricane Sandy destroyed most of what remained of Morristown Village while also causing extensive damage to Somers Point Ferry Terminal which served as a crossing point for local residents travelling into New York City or Jersey Shore towns like Seaside Heights or Paramus NJ . As a result of these natural disasters many people within Somers Point decided to evacuate their homes leaving behind their belongings and memories of their time there during Hurricane Sandy . The community has bounced back slowly since then with some new development (such as an apartment complex) taking shape while remaining mostly affordable housing remains available for those who need it . Somers Point is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 4,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Camden-Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. Somers Point was founded by Dutch colonists in 1675 and named for John Somers, an Englishman who had settled there in 1619. In 1784, it became part of Princeton Township. In 1838, it became a borough and was merged with the neighboring town of Middletown to form Somers Point Borough. The borough was dissolved on April 1, 1984, and its residents were re-absorbed into Middletown. The first settlement at Somers Point took place in 1675 when Dutch colonists landed there from Holland to farm land they had acquired along the Delaware River Valley. John Somers arrived in 1619 as part of the expedition that established Princeton Township north of Morristown and found land that he would later name for himself: "Somers Point". The original settlers here were primarily farmers who grew corn and other crops such as tobacco; however, some also built homes or opened stores while living off the land. By 1784, when Somers Point became a borough within Princeton Township due to merger with Middletown following approval by referendum vote by township voters ( Large majority yes), many businesses were already open including one Synge’s grocery store which still stands today on Webster Avenue within sight of downtownMiddlesex County Government Building across Broad Street from where our current Borough Hall now stands In 1838 during Reconstruction days many African Americans joined forces with white soldiers against 1863 Union military occupation during America's civil war - this period known as "The War for Southern Rights" - resulting in several battles fought around what is now called "Somers Point", one being fought on July 3rd 1864 between Confederate forces under General Pemberton Vs Union troops under General George McClellan resulting in 2 dead Yankees & 6 wounded Confederates killed & missing plus $3 thousand seized from both sides This event helped spur development around what are now known as Northgate Boulevard/Highway 10A east of present day Sandspit Road (formerly routing NJ Transit Line 9) until then little developed section just outside Borough borders providing transportation links to nearby Camden & Philadelphia forming an important early hub for commercial growth in Morris County . Todayremains an interesting community complete with shopping malls (JCPenney/ Macy's / Sears) major banks (PNC Bank/ JBH Morgan) chain restaurants (Chrysler/ Wendy's / Sonic Drive-In) outdoor marketplaces typically featuring local produce grown onsite or delivered weekly - giving SOMERS POINT its unique flavor not found anywhere else!

The town was founded on a peninsula that is now located at the mouth of the Jersey River. The first residents built their homes onshore and later built outlying structures such as churches, schools, and stores. In 1853, the township of Somers Point became a part of Union County. In 1954, it merged with Union Township to form Somerset County.
