Summit is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Summit is the largest community in Middlesex County and one of its three townships. The other two are Easton and Perth Amboy. The first European settlers arrived in 1764 as part of the Putnam Expedition under Colonel William Tryon. They named their new township after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia. In 1812, when Morrisania was created from parts of Upper Middlesex Township, Summit became an independent township within Morrisania. In 1838, Summit Manor was purchased by Jethro Gibbs from his brother-in-law Joshua Haddon for $5,000 and renamed Gibbsboro Borough because it included what is now Summit Township and most of Northumberland Township (now part of Harrisonburg). In 1871, portions of South Brunswick were detached to form a separate borough called Asbury Park while Northumberland Township remained a part of Morrisania with its own government until 1974 when it became Paterson Borough along with nearby Monmouth Junction. On July 1, 1974, Summit Township regained full independence as per the Consolidated New Jersey Statutes and became known as Summit Borough. On November 15th of that year it merged with neighboring Easton Township to form one municipality which would continue to exist even though both municipalities had been organized as boroughs since1974; this merger occurred due to political pressure from residents in both communities who wanted their own governing body rather than share responsibility with another municipality that they did not fully trust or support. Today there are over 8,000 people living in Summit Borough including 586 businesses employing over 1,100 individuals and generating an estimated $14 million annually in economic activity alone! The Mayor/Council members are Tom Donohue (Mayor), Paula Menardo (Councilman 2), John McGrath (Councilman 3) & David Wojnarowski (Commissioner 2).
