The Coast Guard Station Totowa was first established in 1892. The earliest station was located on the grounds of the present-day Totowa High School. In 1924, the Coast Guard Station moved to its present location on the shores of Lakehurst Cutoff. The station has been operational continuously since then. In 1955, a new Command Center, which is still in use today, was built at the Station. In 1984, a Chapel and Instructional Building were constructed at the Station. In 2005, an annex was built to house the Department’s Fleet Support Squadron and other related units. Today’s Coast Guard Station Totowa is one of NJ’s original nine National Service Stations. Totowa is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. Totowa was established as a town on October 25, 1849 by act of the New Jersey General Assembly. The name "Totowa" is derived from the Lenape word for "place where there are trees". The present town of Totowa was formed on October 25, 1849 when an act of the New Jersey General Assembly approved the proposal to set up a town in what is now Mercer County. The other towns in Mercer County were Easton (originally named Weston) and Paterson (renamed Passaic). They all received land grants from Governor James Woodford and were incorporated into new towns on February 3, 1850. On October 25, 1853, an act of the New Jersey Legislature changed the name of Totowa to its current form. At that time it consisted of only two streets: High Street and Riverside Drive. Both streets were designated as avenues leading out to large farms located along their respective sides of the river. In 1898 - when Totowa became part of Camden - both High Street and Riverside Drive were realigned so they crossed over Route 1 near what is now called Park Avenue east of downtown Camden and went back downriver until they reached our present-day location just south of Interstate 95/Route 7 exit #2 near White Sands Pkwy./Lenape Rd./Lakewood Blvd./Upper Ring Road/Kirkland Ave./North Brunswick St./Newark Ave./South Brunswick St., crossing I-95 outside its original bounds between exits #1&2 in Newark but still within Trenton's city limits; all this without having been told about it by either Camden or NJ Transit! In those days things really did happen!

The Coast Guard is a national emergency response force and is responsible for the defense of coastal communities, waters, airspace and offshore installations. In 1978, Congress passed the Magnuson-Stevens Act which designated the Coast Guard as an international law enforcement agency focusing on Counter-Terrorism, Maritime Security and Fisheries issues. The Coast Guard has developed a powerful network of agent stations throughout America that can respond to any situation quickly. In 2001, the Coast Guard History Museum opened in New York City and it was designed to promote maritime history education across all levels of students. The museum features artifacts from both American and international sources including items from the Commandant of Marines’ Logbook (1893-1914), First Mate Alfred Thayer Mahan (1796-1862) and Petty Officer 2nd Class Edwin Ladd (1920-1996). It also contains interactive exhibits about maritime history with models or ships from different periods including replica USS Constitution Museum in Portsmouth NH (1797) and HMHS Queen Elizabeth II at Hampton Roads VA (1938). The United States Navy joined World War II on 8 December 1941 with President Franklin D. Roosevelt declaring war on Japan. On 15 December 1941, Vice Admiral Chester Nimitz ordered Flag Officer in Charge Pacific Fleet Fleet John Richardson to prepare for offensive action against Japan by launching Operation Husky . Japanese submarines had penetrated into Hawaiian waters undetected on 3 November 1941 thus opening up new ocean shipping lanes for Japan while crippling US naval strength in the Central Pacific Area . Hawaii was an ideal target because it was isolated from potential allied attack points; its geography made it difficult to defend; its population was largely self reliant; Honolulu had no airfields capable of supporting large numbers of fighter planes;and there were few if any strategic assets within range worth attacking without warning Code Pink operations were planned as part ofOperation Yarrow Plan but this plan failed when Vice Admiral King postponed his launch until after Hawaii's overthrow on 9 February 1942 At 0440 hours 11 January 1942 Task Force 58 under Rear Admiral McIntyre sailed via Pearl Harbor en route to take aboard survivors off Kwajalein At 0500 hours they reached their destination refueling tanker PGM San Francisco before sailing back out at 0510 hours They arrived off Kwajalein At 0515 hours they began fire support duties during Operation Ironclad From Kwajalein Island Japanese forces began shelling targets ashore at 0700hours using small boats firing 50 caliber machine guns

Totowa, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey on the southern shore of Long Island Sound. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Totowa was founded by German colonists in 1764 and became part of the United States in 1807. In 1814, it became a township and in 1838, a specific borough. Totowa was incorporated as a city on April 14, 1898. The city's first mayor was John W. McCormack (1898-1900). The community of Totowa developed around the approach to Woodbridge Landing on Long Island Sound from which vessels brought goods and passengers to New York City during the time when that port played an important role in trade with both Great Britain and France. The landing place for ships became known as "Ferry Point" after one such vessel stopped there for supplies in 1675. ferry point continued to be used even after the opening of Mystic Bridge which connected New York City with Long Island in 1825. At first transportation through Long Island Sound was by horse or carts; but early merchant vessels began using steamboats to navigate their way between points on Manhattan's Upper East Side and cutting off direct travel across the sound by land much faster than could be accomplished by walking or riding overland
