In 1805, John Nicholson opened his own roasting and selling business in Totowa. He was one of the first to add soluble sugar to coffee beans so that they would be more workable.
Totowa, New Jersey is a small town located in Hudson County, New York. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York–Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General John Totowa (1777-1852), an American Revolutionary War hero who commanded a brigade of cavalry in the Battle of Saratoga. The first settler in Totowa was Isaac Rowe in 1788. His family lived on Main Street until 1813 when they moved to a farm on Putnam Avenue. In 1815, the village of Totowa was born when landowner Nicholas Woodruff donated four acres of land to be used as a village square and cemetery. The first meeting of the Village Board took place on July 8, 1815. In 1832, two brothers named Fenton bought 1/2 mile (0.6 km) east of where Rotterdam Road now stands from Nicholas Woodruff for $4 per acre ($62 worth of today's money). They laid out a town grid that remains present to this day with streets running north-south and east-west and blocks having six houses each side by side called "blocks." Fenton renamed their new town Totowa after General John Totowa because he felt it would give the community more visibility and make it easier for people to find one another during wartime shortages of food or transportation resources needed to support larger militia forces engaged in battle overseas or at home against Native Americans or Tories (British subjects). In fact, most residents still refer to themselves simply as "Totowans" even though their ancestors may have come from other towns within Hudson County or elsewhere in upstate New York during this time period. One interesting tidbit about early TotOWA: only men were allowed vote - women did not start voting until AFTER prohibition nightclubs like speakeasies opened up!

However, after the American Revolution began, Totowa's importance declined and it remained a rural community until well into the 19th century. After becoming an incorporated municipality in 1868, Totowa experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and into the 20th century.
