From the early 1800s until after World War II, Ventnor City was a popular port for shipping goods and passengers to and from New Jersey. The city's success as a maritime center was due in part to its location on the mouth of the Hackensack River, which provided easy access to ships and an abundance of docking space. The early days of Ventnor City's maritime history were marked by rough seas and many challenges. In 1824, when Ventnor City became a town, it was one of only two settlements in Sussex County that did not already have a wharf. The other settlement, Elizabethton, had plenty of land but no harbor so merchants built wharves just outside the town limits. In 1828, Commodore John Stevens selected Ventnor City as the site for Newark Bay Naval Dockyard. The dockyard would be responsible for building warships and coastal artillery throughout New Jersey and Delaware. It also served as an important training ground for naval officers during World War I and II. The Wharf at Essex Street was first used by vessels departing from Newark Bay Naval Dockyard in 1847-48. By 1860, all but one of the wharves invented by merchant seamen had been destroyed by storms or ice (the exception being those at Queen Street). By 1865 all but two of NJ's original eight commercial wharves were gone - one located at Clinton Avenue in Elizabethton (now called Elizabethton Landing), while the other went downriver at Thames Street near what is now known as Times Square (later renamed Herald Square). With fewer opportunities for revenue from land sales and more reliance on trade with Great Britain through waterways, business began to decline inventing new commercial wharves declined as well between 1865-1886; however this wasn't permanent because entrepreneurs soon came up with new ways to use waterfront space such as using it for storage or creating piers jutting out into open water to serve as carousels or ferries ferrying passengers between Newark Bay Naval Dockyard dockside piers and nearby shopping centers/villages Shipments continued to increase However due to increased competition among American transportation companies sailing through Atlantic Harbor during this time there was less need for Portsmouth because larger ships could dock at Brunswick Ferry Terminal instead This contributed greatly to decreased traffic along Newark bay waterfront over time

The name "Ventnor" comes from two English settlers, John Ventnor and his brother Nicholas Ventnor, who arrived in 1681 and 1702 respectively. The first store in Ventnor was established by Nicholas Ventnor on Main Street in 1813. The city's history is intertwined with that of its neighboring communities – Rahway, Ewing and Woodbridge – all of which were founded during the same time period as Venteror City. Rahway was incorporated as a village in 1836, while Ewing and Woodbridge became townships in 1908 and 1966 respectively. Today, much of the city's infrastructure has been built over the years; including a new library system (opened in 2009), an arena for professional basketball (leased to the Newark Liberty Seaway Authority), and several other high-profile projects. In addition to its rich cultural tradition dating back to earlysettlement days, Ventnor City also contains some modernNotable landmarks such as Rutgers University's main campus and Trump Plaza.
