By 1771, over 100 families had built homes here, and during this time, Vineland became known as one of America's most important agricultural communities. In 1818, following the end of the American Revolution, Congress passed a bill authorizing construction of a road between Philadelphia and Trenton under conditions that would make it difficult for British forces to invade America. This road became known as The Great Road or The Mother Road because it connected these two major cities. During World War II, many people from Vineland worked on military installations around America. The Vineland area was settled by Dutch farmers in the 1600s. The first recorded mention of Vineland was in 1624, when Nicholas van Rensselaer granted a land grant to the Benedictine monks of Monmouth County. The monks built a farm on what is now Lower New Jersey Boulevard and called it "Vineland." In 1714, the Treaty of Passaic ended the Seven Years' War and added an additional twenty-six miles (41 km) to Great Britain's colonies in North America. This gave rise to the development of this region as an important crossroad for goods and people heading southward from New York City. soon after, a small cluster of about fifty homes sprang up along Upper New Jersey Boulevard near present day Vineland High School. These early settlers were mostly indentured servants who worked on plantations owned by their masters in southern New Jersey. Trade relationships between these new English colonists and their Dutch counterparts were limited at best; consequently, there is little record discussing life within the boundaries of what is today Vineland Township or Hunterdon County until after independence was gained by both countries in 1777. The first reference to housing developments in Vineland date back to 1853 when two white men named Augustus Sunkenfeld and Solomon Papp purchased 160 acres (56 ha) north of present day Lower New Jersey Boulevard from Abram Goldsmith for $2 per acre ($60 per hectare). Over time, more landowners followed suit: Isaac Watts bought 527 acres (220 ha) northeast of Lower NJ Blvd., John Ledyard acquired 636 acres (240 ha), Samuel Fenton took 712 acres (280 h), Cornelius Vanderbilt acquired 1,428 acres (500 ha), James Buchanan took 2,546 acres (1,200 h), Ebenezer Cooke acquired 3,568 acres (1,400 h). In 1865-1866 three large licenses were issued for enterprises including a millinery factory known as Oneida Mills which became one of America’s leading employers during that period; also located here was Newark General Hospital founded by Drs. Benjamin Goodspeed and Ezra Cornell with help from Colonel John Stevens; this hospital would remain one of America’s top medical facilities until its closure in 1948. It should be noted that much like many other villages throughout northeastern Pennsylvania during this time period growth came not only due to commercial endeavors but also through immigration - Germans arrived beginning around 1800 while Poles arrived starting around 1830 bringing with them skills such as spinning woolen thread into cloth products which quickly caught on among American textile mills across the pond - thus providing jobs for local residents while also driving down prices on imported goods exported back home Additionally another factor contributing significantly to village growth during this time frame was increased access to transportation - improved roads facilitated easy movement between factories and markets creating an ever growing demand for goods consumed within these communities
