Vineland, NJ is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey. The population was 9,711 as of the 2010 census. Vineland lies on the Delaware River and is bordered by Sussex County to the north, Hudson County to the east, and Monmouth County to the south. The first European settlers in Vineland were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. The area that now includes Vineland was originally part of what was known as West Essex Township. It became part of Union Township on November 3, 1838. The name "Vineland" derives from Johannes van der Valk (1624-1683), an early settler who named his estate "Vineyard". In 1851, John Fenton purchased land at what is now Vineyard Heights for $4,000. He built a two-story wooden house there which still stands today. In 1859, he donated another piece of land - this time 1/2 mile long and extending fromtoday's Main Street to river - for use as a public school district called Vineland Public Schools. In 1865, he also donated funds for construction of a white schoolhouse which served students in Vineland until 1924 when it was replaced by Green Acres Schoolhouse which still serves students today). In 1898, John Fenton donated an acreage adjacent to his home to become Newark High School which opened in 1901 and remains one of the most popular high schools in New Jersey today. The Growth Company Corporation built headquarters and other businesses along South Avenue near Park Place in 1927-28; these buildings are now known as Highland Towers Apartments project (HTA).. The company closed its business operations after only three years but left behind an impressive legacy including: over one million square feet of office space; twelve multi-million dollar dollars worth of equipment; several thousand jobs created throughout Essex County; five miles of streetscape improvements funded with private money In 1932 Japanese American citizens living within commuting distance of Newark were given opportunity to purchase homes in blocks designated as part of Japan American internment during World War II . This program known as "Operation Great Lakes" aimed at removing Japanese Americans from their homes without having them face trial or deportation . Many residents chose not to sell their homes because they believed that they would be re-occupied by the military during wartime . However many others decided to fight for their rights even if their property may have been taken away Many people view Vineline's history through its role within Operation Great Lakes – specifically #8498 – which served as Headquarters for many months between December 1942 and May 1945 while much larger concentrations occurred around Newark Liberty International Airport where many people lived directly below military facilities
