On January 1, 2009, it merged with neighboring Paramus to form a new city called Paramus-Wanaque. The merger won approval by voters in a referendum held on November 3rd. Wanaque was founded by German immigrants in 1853. The community of Wanaque grew rapidly due to its location on the New Jersey Turnpike and its close proximity to Philadelphia. In 1909, Wanaque became a borough in Bergen County. In 1974, the community merged with Teaneck to form the current City of Teaneck. The history of Wanaque is intertwined with that of Bergen County and Philadelphia. The community was founded by Germans who came to America in 1853. Wanaques rapid growth can be traced back to this time period as it lay on the Newly developing Jersey Shore, which at that time was only a wasteland filled with abandoned farms and workshops. With easy access to Philly and other major cities, the area quickly developed into a thriving city-state. In 1908, when Bergen County was created from portions of Middlesex and Hudson Counties, Wanaques status as an incorporated borough declined as it now shared borders with both counties. However, due to its location on NJ Turnpike – which made it very accessible for businesses – Wanaques continued to grow rapidly and become one of Bergen Countys most populous municipalities by 1916 when it had over 63,000 residents living within its boundaries alone! This success led directly to the incorporation of Teaneck into Bergen County in 1974; therefore perpetuating the connection between these two communities throughout their histories! Today, Wanaque continues to experience significant growth thanks to its proximity To Philly’s vibrant culture and nightlife; however, given its small population size (just over 10K residents) there is little chance for any large-scale implications or redevelopment projects outside of basic infrastructure improvements or sidewalk repairs/replacing/building new homes within city limits - much like what has occurred in neighboringTeaneck since 1974!
