The name Alamogordo comes from the Apache word "alamo" which means "a strong fortress." In 1865, Benjamin Heard built Fort Fillmore on what is now Fort Knox Road northwest of town to protect Indian trade routes through New Mexico Territory. He also founded an agricultural community called Harmonville which became a center for cattle raising and later served as an important base for wagon road construction during both World War I and World War II. Later that year, silverute prospectors discovered significant quantities of silver ore at Alamogordo Creek within minutes of each other while working on claims northeast of town along East Mesa Verde Creek; this led to the development of nearbySilver City and eventually downtown Alamogordo itself. Alamogordo's economy changed significantly following World War II when government jobs dried up due to rationing; most importantly though, this period marked the beginning of modern Alamogordo city growth which has continued uninterrupted since then.
