The U.S. Navy has been deployed in a variety of ways over the years, including as part of World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War. Each deployment has had its own unique set of gift history1975-present. In 1975, when the United States invaded Afghanistan to oust that country's Taliban government, America sent a contingent of warships known as Task Force 382 under Rear Admiral Rickover to provide logistical support and assistance to coalition forces fighting against the Taliban regime. The USS Coral Sea (LHD-5) was one of these warships and served as an ammunition dumps for Task Force 382 during their stay in Carlsbad, New Mexico. After Operation Neptune's Spear ended in September 2001, both the LHD-5 and USS Coral Sea were decommissioned and sold to private individuals for use as vessels they desired. Since then, each successive U.S.-led military mission has resulted in new gifts being sent back home from our allies and partners around the world - some old (like an Iranian oil tanker that was gifted back by Iran after it received sanctions relief), while others more recent (like an American helicopter donated by Japan following their earthquake damage). By 1970 Carlsbad had shrunk to less than one thousand residents; however, it remains an important cultural center in south-central New Mexico despite significant challenges dating back to its past.
