Deming is a city in New Mexico, United States. It is the county seat of Bernalillo County and the largest municipality in the state. The population was 187,859 at the 2010 census. The city was founded by Pascual Deming on December 8, 1892 as a small ranch town located near what is now Albuquerque. In 1924, Deming became part of the New Mexico Territory following its creation from portions of Arizona and Texas. This led to several attempts by New Mexico Governor Elliot Spitzer (2000-2004) to promote regional development initiatives which failed due largely to local opposition within the corporate community who opposed any type of public investment outside their own businesses.[3][4] In response late in 2000s efforts by then Mayor Ruben Gallegos (2005-2009), plans were made for a mixed use redevelopment project known as Park Place which spanned over three blocks across both sides of I-10 just east of downtown;[5][6][7] however despite initial positive reviews[8], City Council Unanimity voted against approval citing concerns about proposed traffic patterns,[9] leading ultimately to development falling through and eventual abandonment until it was resurrected again under Mayor Steve Adler late last year. Despite setbacks throughout his tenure,[10], Mayor Adler has worked hard towards rejuvenating downtown areas such as Market Street [11]; revitalizing Pershing Square;[12][13][14] expanding transportation options including new light rail lines;[15][16] creating nightlife opportunities with an opening up of six hotels/resorts adjacent thereto; along with renovations/updates at El Rancho Casino & Resort - bringing it back into compliance with both Federal gambling regulations (currently operating illegally)[17]; increasing enrollment at nearby universities including San Diego State University & Southern Utah University – resulting in significant job growth for locals since relaunch; adding nearly 2 million square feet – makingDeming one of North America’s fastest growing cities overall - all while maintaining affordability constraints necessary for Continued Job Growth potential.[18][19]}
